I was just curious how many of you out there model your own railroad. By own I mean a railroad that you completely made up or an imaginary division of a real railroad past or present. I have been toying with the idea of adding a fictional class 1 for interchange to the real class 1 I will be modeling. Below you can see the different roads that I have come up with and the corresponding paint schemes. Disclaimer: I am unaware of any of the roads I have imagined up ever existing past or present and if they do it is purely coincidental. edited:removed photo see link below A larger version can be found here: http://www.geocities.com/nw_powhatan/Large_PaintSchemes.gif I envision all of the roads that I have created as being fallen flags now under the corporate umbrella of the Miami Eastern. So anyone out there have their own roads? If you do how about sharing them with us. [ 21. January 2005, 18:22: Message edited by: The Arrow ]
Nate- Great stuff! Fantastic imagination! I wish that more people would go this route. I have a couple of companies dreamed up. (Wish I was better with using the paint programs!) Will try and find the Zip disk, and post them a little later today. Boxcab E50
I'm working on mine... it's been up and down The OHIO & FLORIDA CORPARATION of TRANSPORTATION I made it a Corp. so I can have other means of transporting goods & people. Plus, I can easily shift CSX items to my scheme. Sneaky, eh?! Your ideas are sweet!
How about some route background that I created to support these imagineered railroads. If you take a look at the two links following you will see route maps. The first map is of the different railroads that made up the Miami Eastern and their respective routes. http://www.geocities.com/nw_powhatan/Miami_Historic.gif The second is of the Miami Eastern as it would appear today in the modern Class 1 rail network. The lighter colored lines are the major Class 1 railroad routes in the U.S. today according to their corporate websites superimposed onto my map. You'll notice that I don't have any of CN's routes but I could not find a route map for them. CP is gray, NS is Green, CSX is blue, BNSF is red, UP is yellow, KCS is brown. http://www.geocities.com/nw_powhatan/Miami_Modern.gif Hope everyone is enjoying a chance to discuss their creative ideas and sharing it with us. Even if you don't model a imaginary railroad now what would your railroad be? Thanks everyone for sharing.
Nice looking schemes!!! Wouldn't it be nice to have a Trainboard scheme for locos, and have someone do a run of decals? (Ducking for cover and rushing for the exit)
I'd be happy with a forum car (looks around) - if someone would run a few decals for me, and somebody else would be willing to paint it up, I would be happy to donate a car or two (NOTE: my stuff is mainly older i.e. used - but I do have a few new ones) Of course you can also check out these links as well: http://www.trainboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/ubb/get_topic/f/9/t/003528 and http://www.trainboard.com/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/9/t/003495 any volunteers? Of course I only have N scale stuff, you HO guys & gals will have to have your own bit going. Then there is the battle of couplers, unless "sets" of cars were made [ 11. I model a tourist excursion train called the Oyster Creek & Western. I like to kit bash weird cars for it.
Some years ago, the fad was to have your own private railroad. When I say some years ago, I mean Gorre and Daphaetid, Virginian and Ohio, Great Southern, Milwaukee Union Terminal, Cananduigua and Southern, and Ohio Southern come to mind. As recently as 10 years ago, everyone seemed to go to a prototype and model a specific section or era. I tried to have my own road and did get decals, etc., but the pull of seeing prototype trains and real places got me back to modeling a specific prototype. My private road name still exists. I just pretend it is a lease company providing cars and special services as necessary. BTW, how many TBers are members of the Virginian and Ohio Historical Society?
Actually some of the private railroads you named is what got me thinking about making up my own. Well that and a article in MR Planning 2004 about the Maumee Route that Bill Darnaby is creating. That article got me thinking that you could create a private railroad and make it feel like an actual prototype. For instance the Miami Route that I created was first laid out by looking at transportation maps of the states I wanted it to operate in. Then I just placed a right-of-way on the map and then knew what railroads the Maumee would cross and interact with while modeling the real locations. The only difference is that I have added a railroad to serve the city station and industries. Nothing wrong with another railroad in town. In fact I would like to incorporate one of these imagined railroads in my next layout. I will be modeling the N&W in the steam-diesel transition but could link N&W to Chicago thru one of my private roads. I am enjoying all of your comments and railroads, keep them coming. I believe this can help to spure some creative ideas.
I have been freelancing for as long as I have been modeling. Here are the paint schemes that one might see on my N-scale Hoffman Valley RR. The last scheme is actually done as a tribute to my dearly departed friend: Russ
Was aware of it. I never joined. Unless there's been a recent change, it's currently inactive. Has been so fro a while. There is a Yahoo Group. Boxcab E50
SLSF Freak, I like how your paint scheme on the shortline locos with the red and white strips work back to blend with the Frisco units. Reminds me of how railroads used to paint there F and E units with strips or colors that tied them into the passenger cars.
Nate, For what it's worth, I like your Texas & Missouri paint scheme. In any case, all your railroad names and schemes are neat looking.
Aside from the Frisco, I've been modeling the Oklahoma & North Eastern, a freelanced road based on the former Northeast Oklahoma, an interurban/steam railroad that once ran from Miami, OK to Columbus, KS, serving the lead & zinc mines in the area. The last part of the NEO was purchased by Frisco in 1964, which got NEO's four Alco switchers. In that light, I have 3 RS3s, 1 RS1, and an S2 used on the "Chat Pile Line" (NEO's slogan was the "Ore Line"). Here's a pic of one of the ONE Alcos: It's painted blue with yellow stripes, in honor of NEO A&M Junior College in Miami. One of the other RS3s and an S2 are both being repainted into a maroon & gray paint scheme reminiscent of the NEO. A proposed paint scheme for a chopnosed Geep, lettered for ONERail, a composite of three lines- the O&NE, Joplin District Terminal (JDT, my youngest son's initials) and the Missouri & Kansas (MoKan). O&NE currently operates the former Frisco Miami Branch in Miami, as well as the former Frisco Carthage Branch from N. Baxter to Riverton and Galena, KS and Joplin and Carthage, MO. JDT does all heavy switching chores in the city of Joplin, MO, while the MoKan operates the former Frisco line from Pierce City, MO to Wichita, KS (the line is gone northwest of Wichita to Ellsworth, KS) Ya want a route map? I've got yer route map right HERE!!! All the towns are real. This way, I can use the Frisco as interchange, as well as operate former Frisco branches. I had it based in the late 1970s, but I may bring it into the 1980s, and operate the Frisco like the BN "merger" (yeah, right, merger) never took place. I've been toying around with the idea of using the former Rock Island Choctaw Route from Memphis, TN to Tucumcari, NM, with the branches south of Little Rock, AR and the lines from Wichita to Ft. Worth (intersecting at El Reno), but that's for another time I have fun with the O&NE, and it gives me a break from staying in the protoype with the Frisco now & then. IRL, the Miami Branch would still be the Miami Branch, but on my layout it's the ONE.
Chris, Thanks for your comments on the Texas and Missouri paint scheme, I based that logo on a shape similar to the GM&O just turned upside down and lenghtened. friscobob, Looks like your private road could interchange with the Texas and Missouri on the old route map. Sure you don't have some Texas & Missouri cars at the interchange track? Thanks for everyone's replies, keep them coming.
The Grey and Grandure needless to say is my own. It rents a lot of equipment from other rodes that mangment likes the pain scheme from . In particular the Orange / Maroon GN and Multi Mark CP. I don't have the skills to do my own but I intend to try a Dark Grey - Hood and upper vents / radiators Light Grey - Midsection Dark Grey - Trucks Black - Fuel Tank Logo from nscale_lover Engine Names, (no numbers), - Any one who would like to have thier handle or name. I am considering having them edged in brass and fixed to the mid section.
steve w., I really like your paint scheme and howling wolf logo! Do you have any cabooses or rolling stock on your roster in either of your schemes? If only today's class 1 railroads in the U.S. would bring back some colorful schemes of the past. Guess BNSF has done that but the others are still stuck in the less is better mode. All of the major class 1's have fallen flags in their corporate family history. It would be great to see them look at some of the old schemes for inspiration for a new paint scheme on their locos.
