<font color="336633">Just a quick question, what is the best water based paint for modern Frisco boxcars?

    Cheers.

When you say modern boxcars, are you referring to the yellow ones, beige ones, or boxcar-red ones? Either way, I would recommend Polly-S - I've had some success with the BCR paint.

Bob, Matt wants to do a Frisco boxcar that he can use in early BN period. What color was the latest Frisco scheme - and which decals are available.

    Thanks [IMG]

All the colors I mentioned were in use by Frisco on the modern cars circa November 1980. Therefore, with a little weathering, you could still do a Frisco car thru the 1980s. They mostly kept the SL-SF reporting marks just as long.

IIRC< Microscale makes decals for Frisco rolling stock.

On the cars: there were 50-foot single-door boxcars, painted boxcar red w/ an aluminum roof; yellow 60-foot and 85-foot auto parts cars; and beige 50-foot hi-cubes and waffle-side cars.

Now if you wanted something unique to Frisco and BN, Frisco DID have quite a few P-S 100-ton covered hoppers painted Cascade Green with SLSF reporting marks.

For good photos of Frisco rolling stock, check out George ELwell's Fallen Flags site.

<font color="336633">Right, time to come back to this again, the boxcars I am modelling are frisco number 11978 a 50' Hi cube waffle side boxcar single sliding door built by ACF in 1974, this car will be the beige colour.

The second car (which is ready for paint!) is Frisco number 44158 built also in 1974 but by Pullman Standard (still with origonal door as several had replacements),This car will be brown.

The next question I have is which decal sets will do these cars? The microscale site does not help as there is no pics of the decal sheets.

All help greatly received (and it will mean there are 2 Frisco cars on my BN layout!!!).

    Cheers

Well, since it'll mean the first two decent pieces of rolling stock on your layout, I'll have to do some research. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] :D

Seriously, IIRC Polly S has a water-soluble boxcar red that should work. Not sure about the beige, though, as I've never painted on in that color.

<font color="336633">Thanks Bob, the waffle boxcar is taking some time to do as I am having to shave off every other "waffle" as the ones on this car are not all the same size........

as you can see in this pic (not quite the same car), on the G Elwood site.

    STanford,
I paint my engines using Floquil SP Daylight Red and Reefer White. The black engines are painted with Gloss Black.

On the E7s and E8s painted in the racehorse colors, the lettering is in yellow.

I've used Boxcar Red on several boxcars (esp. some 40-footers and some McKean 100-ton 15-panel hoppers) I've also decaled in Frisco.

    Matt-

I may have found an answer for the beige color- I was in the hobby shop down in Falmouth today, and was checking out the paint rack. I noticed the T&HB Cream (Polly Scale, number 404055), and it looked pretty close to the color used on Frisco beige boxcars.

If there's a hobby shop there that stocks Polly Scale, check it out & see if it'll work. BTW, it's water-soluble [IMG]

I would put a picture up of the first boxcar that is ready for paint but I can seem to find my usb cable for the camera, I guess I shouldnt have had a tidy up.

    THANKS, STICKYMONK.
I GUESSED THAT BETWEEN YOU AND BOB, IF THERE WERE ANY, ONE OR BOTH OF YOU WOULD KNOW. I BELIEVE THAT BACHMANN PRODUCED A HOOD UNIT IN THE RED AND WHITE, BUT HAVEN'T SEEN ANY OF THOSE IN YEARS.

Stewart Hobbies DID have F3s offered in the black & yellow, but it's been a long time back. LifeLike had Proto2000 FA1/FB1s also in black- should still be able to find them.

ASide from those two, there have been no other models, (unless Athearn came out with some in the Genesis line that I don't know about)

<font color="336633">I am suprised that they havent done them yet, after all they have done some rather more unusual ones like NdeM and B&LE (Frisco must be more modeled than those).

The black and yellow were pre-mandarin/white.
