I've been trying different ways to do this for my layout, and this is the one I like. It's a little rough, since I'm learning how to decal stuff. So how close was this to happening? =)
Here are my submissions for this thread... My Kato P-42s for my California Zephyr This one goes without saying... Am I twisted or what? Its one of three Con-Cors that I got before Kato announced theirs. It will probably end up as a mantle queen. It runs like garbage.
I once (just for the heck of it)... ...painted an extended vision caboose black and added the READING stripes and name from a set of left over decals I used on an FP-7 (back when I wasn't well, doing HO and basically messing up my life). I thought I'd try a fantasy scheme and the end wall panels would carry yellow zebra stripes. I never got to the zebra striping. I did however find out how many pieces an HO R-T-R caboose can be converted into a kit. Red is a better color for cabeese. Bill or George, anything but Sue. Having worked recently at a job trackside on the NY/CT border across from the original LIFESAVERS factory in Port Chester NY, I was tickled seeing P-42s running in a MOD New Haven scheme. It was someone's fantasy come true and always a big thrill to watch 'em clatter across the Boston Post Road trestle. Mark
The WP P42s work. For a moment, I thought, "What is that?" Exactly the correct reaction. And it's not even a favorite scheme of mine. It's just convincing. The speed-lettered Warbaby also doesn't look incongrous, as that lettering style isn't out of the steam era - just not on SP.
To me, this is how a Missouri Pacific SD50 should have looked instead of having the Borg paint scheme applied..... Brian
QUOTE=Grey One;505753]Brakie - is there a history to go with your road name? I'm just curious. My "Grey and Grandure" was based on a accidental mispelling that stuck.[/QUOTE] First I apologize for missing your question. Heres the History..The C&HV name is from the real C&HV. The Columbus & Hocking Valley Ry is owned and operated by the CDB Industries and is one of 7 short lines owned by CDBI.The C&HV came into existence in 1978 when CDBI bought the old Athens sub-division of the Chessie System.During this purchase 2 other short lines was bought, the Parkersburg & Ohio Valley RR that ran from Parkersburg WV to Athens Oh and the Ohio Midland Ry that ran from Jackson,Oh to Newark,Oh.These 2 roads was quickly merged into the new C&HV.By purchasing these roads the CBDI finally had the long sought after southern Ohio coal fields and industries. The CDBI relaid the track from Nelsonville to Athens which had been removed by the C&O some years ago.The old Logan yards was rebuilt and upgraded during this time as it would serve as the home shops and the only major yard on the C&HV since it was centrally located on the line. The second yard would be located in the old C&O(nee CHV&T) Mound Street yard and would require trackage rights over the Chessie to reach..A agreement was struck with the Chessie for those rights. The former P&OV yard in Parkersburg was upgraded as was the OM yards at Jackson and Newark. The C&HV connects with the following roads. Chessie(c&o) at Columbus.N&W at Columbus. DT&I at Jackson Chessie(b&o) at Newark. Scioto Valley Lines at Lancaster. Ironton Northern at Athens. Chessie(b&o) at Athens. Commodities haul: Grain,Lumber,coal,coke,steel,fly-ash,food stuffs, sand, glass, corn sweetener, corn starch, vegetable oils, scrap, pipe, chemicals, paints, news print, pulpwood, wood chips and other general freight.Total cars handle 32,584 a yearThanks to a aggressive marketing team freight traffic has climb a staggering 33% since the CDBI started the C&HV. CDBI owns the following roads. Cumberland,Dickersonville & Bristol Ry.Cumberland to Bristol VA.The CD&B is the flagship road. The CDB in CDB Industries is the same. I've got an Kato SD40 (not Tunnel Motor) in D&RGW with the billboard style 'Rio Grande' lettering. I probably should subletter it as a UP unit... as if Rio Grande took over Union Pacific... heh... heh
Sometime back I saw a photo of an SD45T-2 in UP paint but patched for the SP (Red SP on the nose, gray patches on the side and the cab, with "Southern" patched over "Union" and an SP cab number). Gotta do one of those (although Uncle Pete's lawyers would probably be all over it)!
Finally, getting to do some train-related stuff again!! I got around to converting some old slides (YES! slides) to digital photos.. This is a roster shot of ALL of my engines back in late-1991. This is before, I owned a air-brush or thought about custom-made decals. The bodies were can-spray painted Black and the Light Blue was hand-painted. The lettering was done one letter at a time, with a Letterbetter Sets. Consist: (4)-B25-7s, (1)-U23B, (1)-U30B and (1)-U18B. Chassis-Atlas U25Bs/RS11s Shells-Atlas U25Bs(modified)/Kato U30Cs Jerry G.
Looks like Rock Island blue - interesting color combination, though the black doesn't show up too well. And is that a fuel tender?
Black Widow GS-4 Andrew, If your CC GS-4 is just destined to be a shelf queen, I'd try a Black Widow scheme. If you could find the artwork, Steve (Grey One) would prolly mock one up for you, (he's got a flair for that sorta thing). We've seen modern diesels in Black Widow paint but I think that northern would be way cool!!! 2slim
I'm surprised that CC did not put Black Widow scheme on the 4-8-4. They seem to put on most anything.
Some more Turtle Creek Here's an SW7 and a forty foot box for the TCC. A close up of a TYCO flat, and a Stewart hopper. Paul H. Liddiard
Triplex - Ya, it does look RI-ish. My insperation was actually Western Pacific, my first two engines painted had ALL of the lettering in the same light blue. Changed to white, it was cheaper. Black does present some challenges. And yes, that is a fuel tender. The idea came from Burlington Northern (prototype) as they had just made their first fuel tenders at that time. There is also a road slug behind FCN 253 and the fuel tender. Made from U25B parts. Jerry G.
