    Hmmmmmm.
My buddy picked up an HO SD45 in Conrail paint and wanted to do something unusual with it.
I told him to change the number boards and repaint the numbers yellow for CSX.
Doesn't sound like it's going to work.
What did CSX do with the ones they got before the split? Just immediatly repainted them?

I like the idea of having ex-CR SD45's renumbered and running on CSX. [IMG] In fact, I thought I had a spare Kato CR SD45 (N scale) and I was thinking about doing the same thing. I was going to renumber it in the 89xx series, where CSX moved the SCL/SBD 2000 series SD45's that they had. Since that is stretching the time frame a bit, there is another option: you could explain that the unit is actually re-engined or rebuilt to SD40-2 standards, and number it in the 88xx series or wherever the other CR SD40-2's went.

Either explanation will be plausible to all but the purists.

Another good option, as someone else had pointed out, would be to somewhat crudely paint out the Conrail lettering and logo with a (purposely) darker color blue and reletter it as a lease unit. It would be a great unshopped & unpainted Helm unit (HLCX 65xx series); it would be in the "before" state, and here is the "after":

I modeled an HO scale Athearn SD-45 to be CSX #8903. If i'm not mistaken this unit was an ex SBD unit. Turned out nice! I'll try and play with my digital camera to get a picture of it online for you guys to see! :D

Thanks Chessie for the great suggestions!
    Cool photo too!
My friend has decieded to send his shells to our buddy John (EM7600) for a repaint into our own roadname, the CNERR.
He will be running his locos both at home and at his club.
As soon as he finds out what numbers he can use, we'll be sending them along. The club runs with DCC and after he puts in the chips, it's up to the club to come up with some unused numbers, and hopefully they will be nice and low as these are the first units going under our own name. Anywhere between 1 and 100 would be just fine.
    Our colors will be:
    BLACK CAB
    DEEP RED BODY
    ORANGE HANDRAILS
    WHITE LETTERING
    STRIPES ON THE PLOWS TOO
    [IMG]
After the holidays, I hope to be sending John a couple of freight cars to do in the same manner for me, for my small switching layout.

    John,
That's a great photo! I don't think I have any that good... most of my SD45 photos are of old ex-SCL units. I do have at least one ex-Clinchfield unit, as well as some "newly repainted" Seaboard System units. Scanning those old photos and posting them to my website is one of my next tasks.

Yes, its a very good picture, to model from anyway! The want things have been I kinda got hooked on CSX the last while! Modeling alot of diesels CSX plus a Christmas gift from my girlfriend which is an Athearn C44-9W CSX #9003. And I've noticed that I've been painting and customizing quite a few CSX locos! my next HO scale loco is a GP-38 in CSX pumpkin scheme, #9699 "All American Diesel" :D I just have to get dullcote to begin any future painting... I used a whole 2 crates 48 cans in 2 months! :D I do alot of excessive painting so.... Never does last long when your at it alot so.... Keeps me busy and off the streets and out of trouble and its done that for years! :D

Meyersdale is about 25 miles west of Cumberland, MD. And just north over the state line into Pa.
It's roughly 100 miles south of Altoona. It's about 100 miles south of Pittsburg also.
It isn't near Lancaster County. (Wonderful Place! Did you go to Strasburg while you were there?)

I was teasing John about Meyersdale. It's a lovely little town. They were hit by a tornado a couple of years ago. Very strange since they are up in the mountains. Very much Amish country. There was a lot of damage from the storm too.
My cousins live right outside Meyersdale in Pocahontas County, just 5 minutes from Sand Patch.
It's a long ride from my home, but just beautiful country. I feel like I'm in another world there........a much more peaceful one.......... [IMG]
While I'm sittign in the house I can hear the clip clop of Amish buggies going by, then minutes later you can see them riding down the road below. Wow. Beautiful! [IMG]

Meyersdale is exactly 98 miles south of Pittsburgh, PA, and roughly 28 to 30 miles north of Cumberland, Maryland. Lancaster County is 200 miles east of Meyersdale. I'm within walking distance to the B&O's famous "Sand Patch Grade". Its southwestern Pennsylvania, If you look at an atlas. Find the PA turnpike, and follow it to Somerset, PA, Then look south on the map around 20 to 21 miles and you'll find Meyersdale on it, if following route 219 south.

As Johnny has said... Almost like Amish country... Just not as much Amish as Lancaster County... And yes they do roll up the sidewalks at night! A quiet ole town most of the time! Nothing hardly ever going on! No excitememnt or anything of interest to kids...

And yes, about 2 almost 3 years ago this area was hit by an F4 Tornado... Salisbury, PA was weeded out and demolished... Very devistating! In the summer time the older generation, (my moms age group) is terrified that we're gonna be hit again! Their were 4 Tornado whatches out this past summer and 6 Tornado warnings that they were in the area, in the sky and could touch down at any time! It really shook everyone up.... I watched as my mother trembled setting on the couch in my basement were my layout is.. Guys, guess what ole John was doing???? It sure worked to get my mind off things! I mandated my opperators stool as the rest of the family was seting in terror on the supplied couch... That was placed down their for the layout room and all...Nice to have things like that in the basment for obvious reasons and even the surprize reasons such as natural disasters!

John, I was there about a week after the storm.
Yes, I saw Saulsbury too. It was wierd to see such destruction in Pennsylvania from a tornado, but also strange to see one hit in the mountains. It's something you see in the plains......

Meyersdale is a nice town. A little more sleepy than I'm used to, but what the hey! A nice place!
And Sand Patch is a very, very cool place!
I envy you being soooooooooo close to a busy mainline like that!

I hope to be down there in the spring. So we'll hook up and I'll get to see what great work you do with your custom painting!

Yes Johnny Salisbury was a devistation to alot of people around my area and all, and the strange part that I couldn't seem to understand and all was the fact of a Tornado in the mountains! It flustered everybody.

Anyway you visit the area in the spring and all and get ahold of Pete and all we'll get something up and cookin at the station! :D I'm sure of the fact I got plenty to run! :D
