Do you favor Eastern, or Western roads, and why? I'm talking about the majors, pre all these mergers, so I'm not naming names. Please vote in the poll and then post your thoughts.
I'm an east coaster and more importantly from MERLIN! CRAB CAKES and FOOTBALL thats what MARYLAND DOES!
It's western for me, I grew up in Seattle and remember seeing all the Great Northern and Northern Pacific box cars all over the place. Plus to me there is nothing cooler than watching a train cruising through beautiful mountain scenery.
I like best Midwestern railroads west of Chicago. Which i think of as in the middle. So i voted eastern, because of railroad like the CV, NH and NYC.
At present I model western, but I did not turn down the GG1 nor will I turn down the 20th Century Limited with a Hudson pulling it, if they ever make it. Are you listening Kato?
I grew up in Chicago, so my answer is YES! Still, I lean western, because they lended a certain air of the exotic. Certainly morso than eastern and midwestern roads. Crossing the Rockies and the Sierras. Palm trees, Spanish revival architecture. huge forests and unbroken wilderness. It's just more romantic. Of course, as I grow older, I learn to appreciate what I had growing up more and also those great parts of eastern railroading. In particular applachia mountain railroading.
I voted Eastern because that is what I overwhelmingly prefer these days, although until about two years ago, I would have called you crazy if you'd have told me I would ever be modeling anything other than the Santa Fe. Jamie
Lets see, I model Gulf Colorado & Santa Fe (ATSF in Texas), Texas & New Orleans (SP in Texas), International-Great Northern (MoPac in part of Texas), Burlington Rock Island (Joint CB&Q/CRI&P in Texas) Missouri Kansas Texas of Texas (Katy in Texas), Kansas City Southern, ATSF and SP Pacific Lines. I guess that puts me west of the Mississippi and in the West. I grew up riding the C&NW, PRR, Rock Island, SP and GN. More west than east there too.
Santa Fe since that's what I've seen in Flagstaff, AZ my entire life. Southern Pacific on trips to Phoenix Rio Grande since that Amtrak ride when I was 11 Burlington Northern cause I like Cascade Green Conrail (how'd that get in there?) Don't know, just like big blue. Hmm, 4 to 1. Guess the West wins for me. -Mike
Western Railroad Mmost of my adult life I've been around Western Railroad Southern Pacific; hence that is what I model as well
Eastern roads. After spending years railfanning the Delaware and Hudson there was no question or second thought on which railroad to model.
Western roads. Some BN/BNSF, since it runs through town. Had started taking a liking to the UP, before I came to my senses!! Now, primarily the Rio Grande. And a few other western roads. In N Scale anyway. The 3 rail stuff is a mixture of anything and everything! And the G Scale stuff is gonna be primarily Rio Grande. I've never had reason to be excited about the eastern stuff. But, that's personal opinion only. It's interesting in its own right.
May I say both? I presently model the west but there is just something about the N&W 1218 that I just love along with the Class Js, Y6bs, and coal railroading in general. Also, as my avatar suggests, I still have much love for my hometown road. You western guys haven't seen anything until you see a long coal drag struggling up some Appalachain hills LOL:tb-tongue:
I model the UP, SF and SP but i have never seen any of them in person. I have lived on the east coast my entire life (62 yrs.) and have never been out west. Dave
