From the Mojave side just up the foothills... I believe this was a local to Tehachapi from Mojave. Shot 99. Dave http://www.dpdproductions.com - Featuring the TrainTenna Railroad Scanner Antennas -
Right about when the piggyback craze was on. The extreme winds blew trailers right off the flats. Autoracks were susceptible as well. I'll see if I can find an exact date for you--will have to ask around and dig in my books. A photo in Rio Grande in Color V1, Colorado shows the windbreak in place, in a 1978 shot. Per the Yahoo D&RGW list: The derailment that prompted the windreak was a derailment of Vertapac cars with Chevy Vegas being blown off in Nov '71. The windbreak, 3-bay coal hoppers, was installed between then and 1973. [ April 13, 2006, 01:26 PM: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]

Maybe so, but the damage claim the railroad had to deal with--ouch! As for straight track, there sure isn't much in the bulk of the area from Rocky Siding all the way to Pinecliffe, CO... Here's an 11-unit light power move just west of Tunnel 1:

WB autorack train, struggling up Track 3, approaching Dale Jct (just off to the left). Where I'm at is approximately 150 feet over the track (which went through a last deep cut before getting to Dale Jct.). On Sherman Hill, October, 2005
