Effective 1 January 2002 we will begin accepting entries. The contest subject will be 'Winter Railroading Scenes' photographs ... either prototypical or modeled, (models should get extra credit during judgment) .. so start digging out some of those nice winter scenes. Good luck! Oh .. and the contest will end the last day of January 2002. [ 22 December 2001: Message edited by: Ironhorseman ]
This sounds promising! I'm planning to go out trainchasing the day after Christmas and maybe I'll run up to Stevens Pass and see what I can bag in the snow. BTW, I'm glad to kow I'm not the only one who has lived in the Yreka area, When I was growing up my mom was building that big white house on the hill you see from I-5 down by the Easy St. exit. I was driving through there about a year ago and caught the YW and decided it was another case of Mark Twain's famous line (as modified). THe rumors of the YWs demise are much overstated!
Here is 60 miles an hour heading west out of Wichita, Kansas around 1968. The snow was falling about 100 feet on either side, taken near Harper, Kansas by my uncle Howard.
Well after the shot from watash which is a 20 on the scale of 1-10 all I will do is put up a couple of winter road trip links. Snow and Smoke Snow and Smoke 2
Watash.....you've certainly set the standard with that impressive plow shot. Not sure I can match it, but here goes......... One for the steam fans. This is a shot of an ex Southern Railway (U.K.) "King Arthur" class 4-6-0 no.777 "Sir Lamiel" hauling a Santa special in 1984 A Swiss Federal Railways Re460 electric loco entering Kandersteg with a Basel - Brig service. The train was scheduled for 2.25 p.m. and as the clock testifies it was running with true Swiss efficiency A wintry scene on my old n-scale layout. It was created with Noch snow powder just for the benefit of the camera. The Swiss Ae6/6 loco is a brass model made by Lemaco. I can't claim any credit for the next three shots. They were taken by my friend Craig Stevens from California during a trip to Switzerland in 1996 and show a steam rotary plow in use on the Bernina Bahn. The plow is being propelled by an electro-diesel loco. Hope you like them John. [ 03 January 2002: Message edited by: John Whitby ]
Maybe send some of the winter in these scenes down to us Downunder - I'm certain the Volunteer Bushfire Brigades will appreciate it Jim, can you extend the contest to, say, the end of August? There may be enough snow down south to get a shot or 2 of the Ski-Tube John and Watash - great plow shots! Craig's Swiss shots are really neat. I can almost feel the snow. Gary.
Great photos, all! I am not sure I have any photos in the snow (I don't like winter)! John, as Kandersteg is one of my favourite places in Switzerland, I love that pic. I have only been to Switzerland during summer months, but I really must go in the winter, as it gives a new dimension to the scenery. Aren't rotary snowploughs awesome!!!
John, your photos are a thrill, especially the rotary snow plow shots! The rotaries are my favorite MOW equipment next to the big steam cranes! [ 19 January 2002: Message edited by: watash ]
Excellent photos guys keep them coming. I think the photo taken by Harron should be posted as well, what about it Corey?
WOW WHAT PICTURES I AM SPEECHLESS THANKS GUYS FOR MAKING ME A HAPPY CAMPER. A Very Impressed Sunshine
Boy, those are really great shots! As I have said many times, there is nothing like steam in winter. Watash, great stuff! Like you, I will enter one on behalf of a friend, Martin E. Hansen, who needs no intro to those of you who read Railfan and Railroad Mag. This one shot at the McCloud about a year ago today, with No. 18 and 25 steamed up.
I have not seen corey Lynch (Harron) here for a while so thought I'd enter his pic on his behalf. this pic was picture of the week on the TRAINS site
Thanks Paul, been at home, harder to get online with slower internet connection which ties up the only phone line.
