I've been patiently waiting for this one, and hear their out but cannot locate a shop selling them. Anybody seen or bought them yet? Comments about them?
I saw three Bachmann 2-8-0 at the NVN_TRAK holiday party, if they hold up as well as they look Bachmann may have finally got it right. nice detail and really nice slow speed running. these were right out of the box. no tinkering needed. I think it have been worth the extra time needed to get them to market.
Picked one up from my local pusher two days ago. Details are better than Kato's Mikado. Comes with twin traction tires, able to pull thirty Mt cars out of the box. The locomotive runs very well at slow speeds. There is a small spacer weight that is removed to allow for a decoder to fit. Decoder installation took only about twenty minutes. Unit runs flawlessly. Lenz LE10, LE77 or a digitrax DX121 will fit perfectly. Use MT1129 couplers to pitch the rapido's. I have about 12 hours run time on the decoder-equipped engine and I am still impressed. It is not like the other @#!%* Bachman steam engines.
One thing to remember about the Bachmann Consolidation, I took them almost 3 years to make the thing. Just think how much better the Kato Mikado could have been if Kato spent 3 years on it. I'm not tring to bash Bachmann but 3 years is a long wait, while they pump out a new HO model every month, thats the part that really makes me mad. [ 18 December 2001: Message edited by: CNWFoamer ]
\ If i'm not mistaken, SEVEN years have elapsed since the last Mikado release. But I have to agree, with the breakneck pace of HO new products, you'd think Bachman could speed up the process in N. They could also learn from Atlas, don't publicize a new product until its ready to sell.
Ok, Ok, I gotta find me a new "pusher" quick! I Want One! Three! Maybe Seven! I'll make some 0-8-0's out of a few for varity too. Does anybody know of a supplier on the web that has these babies in stock?
The Kato Mike was released in 1996, what i am referring to is the time when the loco was announced to the time it was a reality. This is around 3-6 months for Kato/Atlas locos.
I stand corrected = 6 years . But that definitely illustrates the problem, Kato and Atlas don't announce it until its ready, this is where Bachman has made a mistake by premature announcement. Paul at Atlas has said on their forum it usually takes two years or more to develop a completely new loco. Hopefully Kato has spent the last 6 years making improvements to the Mike - they don't pull well w/o traction tires.
Uhhh... For those of us who still haven't heard and answer to the original question... Where can we find these? Internet source, best price, etc... thanks Clem
I'll try it again. This engine appears to be really hot . All of my local dealers are sold out already. I watched one of these pull 60 MT 2 bay hoppers with ease. Nice slow, smooth and quiet.
Just checked BLW's web site and they have the new Bachmann 2-8-0 on sale for about $90.00. Here's the URL: http://www.blwnscale.com/
The unit I bought was from the local pusher, Joe's Hobbies in Farmingrton Hills , Mi. They had about 12 of the UP's and 12 undecs as of last Saturday. I do not know if he does mail order. Paid $85.00 out the door.
I saw several undecs at Discount Model Trains here in Dallas. I think they do mail order as they have an online store at Trains.com. Not sure of the price but they are usually very competitive. (btw, I have no affiliation with these guys, just a loyal customer) Here is their info... There is an ebay auction for the new 2-8-0. Looks like the HO model (the only real giveaway that it is N is the motor). Awesome detailing!

We recieved two yesterday at the hobby shop from FedEx. After trying one out on the test track today, I bought one. After buying over thirty N diesel locos, This is my first N steam engine. I was waiting for a quality steam engine that didn't break the bank and I think this is it. Very smooth operation with scale speeds as a bonus. Puts Rivarrossi to shame. I already installed a Micro-Trains coupler on the tender this evening.
Here is a pic should that Ebay link expire. I can't wait to get one or two of these, though I must wait until after the holidays Russ Hoffman Valley RR
Saw one of these in a local shop last night here in Sydney and I have to say, for a diesel modeller, I'm impressed. It looked great with fine details and crisp finish, possibly the best to date on RTR plastic steam. The order had only just arrived so one had not been tested - the shop plans on doing that today. The sticker price is AU$239.95, or around US$115. Whether it took 3 months or 3 years to front up, if you are a steam era modeller you should be more than happy with it's looks and reported running quality. Bachmann may finally have their N Scale version of the successful British Branchline OO series. Let's hope this is not a flash in the pan! Gary.
It sounds as though this locomotive could persuade the AWRR management to purchase a steam engine for special duties, fan trips, etc. Well yeah, also because I would just like to run one
Was this very difficult to do? I had a Kato Mikado that I never could get the Micro-Trains coupler installed on correctly. Also, how about the front coupler? Can that be switched?
