Same here Mike - only this side of the pond they're called vari-focals.

Trouble is, as a result I'm now finding myself being temped by the 'Dark Side' - OO/HO

JD- I am very late to this party of a thread. But man, your layout looks impressive from the pages I have scrolled through so far.

It really hits home for me. I live in Sacramento and almost every time I go to the City for work or ballgames, I take the Capitol Corridor train, passing these views that you have modeled.

How did you model your water? The color and texture of the water combined with the rip raff shoreline, look dead on! I am working on my first layout, which is just freelanced. But I'm kind of leaning towards an ocean "town" similar to Dillon Beach or Bodega Bay. I've got a river that feeds into a small inlet/bay and there will be a small fishing wharf. Your layout is absolutely inspiring to me! It's always cool to see guys modeling Northern California. There are so many great areas to model, I'm surprised it isn't done more.

Noah, starting on pages 33-34 you can see how I did the water. Very simple method.:)

    And the after...
Added more piping, pump houses, moved the tank more to the left, the retaining wall on the right, and some more earth/landscaping.

The retaining wall was the biggest improvement. Still have to add more to blend it all into the existing scene but its a good start. Pipes again are just put in where ever to give it a busy look.

Pipes can hide alot of things like irregular ground, woodgrain in backdrop, etc.

Instead of a huge gap between the backdrop and the ground, now there are pipes heading out to tankers waiting for the goods. :)

So pretty much all I plan on doing to it now is the holding barrier around the tank on the left, some workers, some steam coming off some pipes, and maybe if I find a nice enough back ground picture of tanks for depth I will add that later.....
