This is just for a bit of fun, but are you enjoying making your Railroad, or do you get bored sometimes and leave it alone for a few days.

Myself, I enjoy every minuet of each day that I am doing something to it.

    What are your thoughts.

Paul, I have spent my life building tediously detailed displays and models (not all trains) for so long, that I find I get bored or impatient with the "building".

My interest has turned to wanting to "run" the train equipment I now have.

I may again build a couple of odd engines, and of course will have to repair some of the older ones, but certainly not spend any great deal of time at it.

I find I am just as satisfied to run an out of the box engine, as one I have to work on for months to superdetail it before I can run it.

Paul, I'm ashamed of myself to say my not yet complete layout has been dormant for way too long. I've just been so busy with family matters and tired when I get home from work.....well..........
It's not like me to be this way. But, I still railfan and talk too much in TB.
    That's a sign of life I guess.

OOPS! My "heart monitor thing" didn't come out the way I wanted it to.
Looks like I "mainlined" rather than "flatlined" and went to train heaven!

I tend to work on the layout in blocks rather than all the time. I may spend a whole weekend on the layout then not work on it for a month. It all depends on other commitments. At the moment I have been working quite a lot on the layout as I feel very motivated :D

Yep! Bored, angry, frustrated, too tired to bother, changed scales, changed prototypes, given up and done boating or photography. Got all the T shirts. :( :(

BUT .... I always end up back with model trains. Must be in the blood :D :D . Either that or I'm mad

Bored with my layout? No... absolutely not. Am I having fun???? ABSOLUTELY YES!

My problem is I do not have the time to spend on my layout as I want. I am the classic Lone Wolf modeler. EVERY last ounce of work that has ever been done on my layout was by me.

THAT makes completing a layout VERY TOUGH unless one has almost unlimited time to spend on the layout. Most of my work gets done on the weekends when I am not at the office. I usually work 9 to 11 hour days, so after work it is difficult to do anything but have dinner, tend to family matters, chill and go to bed.

I guess my problem is I WISH I HAD the time to be bored w/ my layout!!!

Well right now I'm frustrated at my inability to solder correctly, but I've received some good suggestions from the board, and my bottle of liquid flux arrived yesterday, so hopefully by the weekend I'll be back on the FUN side :D

Well I guess I have to admit just one thing.

--- In the immortal words of "Sherlock Holmes"

    - When you have explored all avenues of possibilities,

    what ever remains,

    how ever improbable,

    must be the answer. -

Okay, I’ve explored all avenues of possibilities in model railroading,

looked at the remains of many a torn down railroad,

thought how improbable it would be to better the last layout,

then come up with the right answer.

This Badger Creek is almost my 45th layout that I have built either for myself or other people. (THIS HAS GOT TO STOP -- BUT I LOVE IT)
This has to be my last layout. - I think, at 65 it had better be.BUT I AM HAVING SUCH FUN THESE DAYS. -- LOL.

At the rate you build them Paul, I'm sure you'll get another couple of dozen against your name [IMG] [IMG] .

    I just wish I, a) had more time, b) wasn't such a slow worker  .

Boring, NEVER! there are so many different things one can do so if I get tired of doing one thing then it's easy to move to something else.
I am in about the same boat you are Paul as I turn 65 next month. After many layouts and moving all over the country, I am finally settled in one spot and will be here as long as my health holds up. Being retired really helps with model railroading. The way my day goes is to walk the dog first. Usually around 8am. Then any chores to keep the house and garden maintained. I then get anywhere from 1 to 3 hours on my new layout. Yes, I did scrap my old one and am just delighted with the new one. During the evening if there is something good on TV, I set up my TV table workshop and love to scratchbuild buildings of all sorts and can still take in the show. It takes me about a week to ten days to build a structure from scratch.
We modellers have to be creative in design, carpenters, electricians, artists etc. What I like about it is my mind gets constanly challenged. Too often my friends and associates who retire without interests just whither and die. Not me and I can still work in N gauge. The eyes need a little bit of help with magnification at times but so far so good.
A real benefit to N gauge as you can get away without the degree of detail that larger scales demand. It's the impression that counts.

I never get bored with my trains, but they do sometimes fall victim to other priorities. That I can handle. WHat drives me really crazy is when everything comes to a dead halt because I'm waiting on somthing. I just moved my working space out to the garage near the layout and things have slowes as I try to find all my supplies. At the moment most progress is at a dead halt until I find the paint cup for my airbrush  On the layout side, thigs are waiting for me to find someplace else to put my freezers so I can get at the layout to put down the subroadbed which is currently stacked in the garage. It's moving, but never as fast as I'd like. Oh well. I have to have at least the mains in by August so that the Natalie Special can run. Nothing like a deadline to motivate you.

when I am working on the layout, I never have time for boredom. I am either congratulating myself on how clever I am, or kicking myself for yet another stupidity perpetrated upon myself and the layout.

What I have found is that I suffered from "hobby intimidation." I think model railroading has to be the most intimidating hobby there is; it calls upon so many skill. You have to be an electrician, carpenter, design layout type, model builder, scenery freak, photo type, collector, prototype worshipper, etc. etc. So when I first came into the hobby I was an arm chair modeler.

Now that became boring for me.

GET BORED WORKING ON THE LAYOUT? NEVER!! I'm having fun and if it doesn't suite everybody else how I build , maintain, and OPERATE my layout, the door is right over there!! AND DON'T LET THAT DOOR HIT YOU IN THE TAIL (I have another word I normally use LOL) ON THE WAY OUT!! My trains are my hobby, and this is how I relax in this CRAZY world that we all are a part of. I don't really care what is happening outside of my basement when I am down there operating the INDIANA RAILWAY. This is my world, I'll get back into the real world when I came back upstairs.

I have a Railroad to operate, and I hear the crew callers getting crews for the night turns out to the mines right now! Looks like I'm gonna run up hollar to #6 Nelsons Brothers mine, and spend my evening servicing the mines around there. Sounds like a good time to me!

Well guys, I have to say that "I AM NOT HAVING FUN TODAY"
Wife got me painting and hanging wallpaper in the Kitchen, took ages to remove all the old wallpaper, but I did get chance to use a real - "STEAMER" getting the old paper off. [IMG]

I know what you mean Rick. You read the mags, and see the stuff Paul Templar does ;) and there is a definite 'pressure' (albeit self-inflicted) to do it as good as you see there.

I just repeat to myself (and anyone else around) "It's your hobby, and it should be fun. Do whatever you want with your trains". One thing I always do is model freelance but while trying to remain within the bounds of protoype possibility. That way I can bend the rules a bit (or tie knots in them sometimes :D ).

Eg. my current project is located roughly on the Pennsylvania/NY boundary in the 60's to 90's era, so I've got Erie, LV, CSX & NS locos. They might never have existed together, but it's near enough for me  .

Paul, my wife made me strip the wallpaper and repaint the room for my railway. I thought while I was doing it "this is not how it should be" (but having done it, she was right - it's much nicer to work in [IMG] .
