Anyone get to see the new Bachmann AUX. tender? I seen in a monthly advertisement I get in the mail that they had made a "B&O AUX. tender. Has anyone seen it? And just what type tender is it? The advertisement doesn't show a picture of it. As always, Thanks in advanced!

I believe the aux. tenders are water tenders, for long range steaming. Bachmann has made a N&W aux tender for many years, and it matches their J class steam engine.

    Black Cloud,
I know its a water tender "extra tender behind" HA! Anyway, my wondering of it is how it looks and so on... I probably could use one depending on what it looks like and all, to the prototype. And how its made.... B&O had a few Aux water tenders but they were a very sparse item on the B&O lines! So I'm wondering just how it looks and if its prototypical.

Actually the new Bachmann water canteens are modeled after the N&W canteens after the ones they used in the 50s. The one Bachmann previously made was modeled after the canteen that NS used on it's steam program behind the likes of 611 and 1218. They were built from ex-L&N tenders.

So, the new ones by Bachmann pretty much accuretley represent the 50s version. They do however incorrectly have a new one painted with a tuscan red stripe to represent the one used with 611.

As for roads, it comes painted for N&W, black with yellow lettering. An upainted version is available, how close it matches a B&O prototype, I couldn't say John. I've yet to actually see one in the store. I've only seen pics from the N&W Historical Society's newsletter. Looks good, I think I'll pick up a couple.

    Jeff,
Thanks! I hope that Walthers or someone has a picture of it on their website soon... I want to see it before I buy one so I know what exactly it is... Being that I'm doing all I can to be prototypical. So I don't have to do any type of chopping on it to make it what it should be... So... But If I see one I'll be sure to post it in the B&O forum that it is prototypical....

    John,
Got to www.nwhs.org (it's the N&W historical society's website0 click on models. You'll find a resin kit of the aux. canteen, not made by Bachmann, but is a dead ringer for it, since both companies are modeling it. The one in N&W's site is way higher than Bachmann's price.

    Jeff,
I'll go and check on that! I'm interested to know if its an actual prototype... If so, I'll end up with one or 2 maybe even 3 all depending. I want to see if its even realitively close. I just don't want to spend say what? $20 or so on it or more just to hack it apart! As I'm well known to do! Anyway thanks for the link I'm headed off to take a look... :D

Wow did I mis quote on a guess price! $69! I'm sure not going to buy one for that price just to hack it apart even if it is close... To me thats a waist of money when I'll just end up with a tender frame! And no body! HA! But it looks like they (who ever made it) done a fine job at reproducing the N&W Aux tender! I bet that ole boy would look good running behind the "J" from Spectrum! :D

The one on the NWHS.org web site is not the Spectrum aux tender, but a kit that came out recently. The Spectrum Aux tenders are very nice and a bargin at about $20. I have one and will get another if I get the Broadway Limtied N&W Class A.

Hot dog Eric! Thanks for the tip on Broadway Limited's release of the 'A'. Finally a plastic 'A' class, something under $500 I hope. I keep seeing nice brass ones on E bay, but over a grand is too much for my pocket right now. It needs to be the fall again, real fast.

Jeff, the Brodway A is also going to have sound !!!!! AND be DCC ready. Doesent get any better that this :D .....Mike

Is the Class A confirmed yet? I know they decided not to do another J Class, but haven't seen anything about an A.

Whoo Hoo! Nevermind, I just saw it on their website! When I got their email reply saying they decided not to do the J, I was hopeful. Now I'm ecstatic! Finally, the first engine I've ever ridden behind, for less than an arm and a leg.

    Mike C,
I don't know of an online source for a B&O Aux tender but I have a lonely picture of one my grandfather had taken probably (guessing) in the early 1940's maybe even the late 1930's. And sadly I can't scan it being I don't have a scanner. But I can explain it alittle bit though. Its like a P class (B&O 4-6-2) square tender without the coal bunker. Same shape, same size all but it doesn't have the coal bunker. Its square, and has 3 axle/ 6 wheel Commonwealth trucks. I'm asumming that the N&W has 3 axle/ 6 wheel Buckeye trucks. Being that N&W was a major user of the Buckeye trucks.

Anyway I'll see if I can find a picture of the B&O's P class 4-6-2's that shows a good picture of the tender. If I can just imagine the picture of the tender like if it doesn't have the coal bunker in it. Then you have the 2 only Aux tenders I know of or can find research on.

    Mike,
I'll look forward in seeing it... I have a project planed but if I can save me alittle work and all on the Aux tender why not ya know... Its just to see if its close so I don't end up buying one and then having to hack it apart to make it like the one the B&O had...

So I ask on the board here to see if any one has seen it... You come up with it and all post it here or up in this tread you can get my e-mail address and send it to me that way...

well, here are a couple of photos of the N&W Tender...

this is photo of the prototype on the N&W Historical Society page for the resin kit (which is identical to the new Spectrum model--just quite a bit more $$$)

    http://www.nwhs.org/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/ecomm_prod_snaps/model_auxtend.html?L+ecomm+mwpj5631+1016664344

and here is the undec Spectrum model that I found on Ebay. No, this is NOT my auction. Interesting how people will pay more for something off Ebay that is readily available in most hobby shops. I haven't seen the B&O version yet, but have the undec, N&W black and the N&W black/red (even tho the red is not the right color...). Very nice models, and hard to beat it for $20.

That one E Bay is not the prototype of the one the N&W used in the steam era. It is a replica of the excursion one used in the 80s and 90s. BEWARE. The other one Bachmann has, I've yet to see anywhere on line or in store. I've only seen it in the new issue of N&W Historical Society's "Arrow" newsletter.

Thanks guys, Thats good for the body... not to much difference with the tenders. For $20 Its not bad at all. However, I wonder if the B&O one has the "B&O" on the sides or if its like "Baltimore And Ohio" on the sides... Hmmmm..

However, I do believe the undecorated version would be a great way to model the Chessie Steam Special's Aux tender without doing much of anything besides a custom paint job. Which is worth $20 to spend to have the train I'm making one car closer to the real prototype and one car closer to being completed...

As for the B&O Aux. tender tho... It does have some slight differences then what the prototype did that would not be to hard to customize. It had a slightly higher front end (the coal bunker section) then what the picture shows... So it wouldn't be to god awfull hard to customize. And it sure wouldn't be hacking it to pieces either... :D :D I'll look into this... I know I can put one to good use thats forsure in my custom Chessie Steam Special! And even a second for the B&O one I was mostly interested in...
