I've been curious for a long time.

I love the Chronicles of Narnia. In the first movie, there is a brown steam loco taking the children to the countryside.

I assume this is a real loco that has been preserved that they brought out for this movie.

Does anyone know details of this loco. The shots in the movie made it hard to see the wheel arrangement, but it appears to be a 4-6-2 (what we in the States call a Pacific type). Anyone know which museum houses this loco where it makes its home?

And has a model even been made in N scale.

I should've said the A4 didn't do "backwards" when in Service; I wasn't including our world class Preservation Railways as they don't have the means to turn locos.

True. I can't verify if they did back in the day though. Of course that begs the question, why would you want to run one of these beauts tender first on a layout anyways. By far the most beautiful engine ever produced. Gresley knew what he was doing. It's a shame most of the LNER engines didn't make it into preservation at a rate the GWR engines did. One suriviving A3 is not enough. Lucky to have the amount of surviving A4s there are. And its a shame that Eisenhower is kept here in the states the way it is. It needs to be running.

It's actually Green - it's GWR 4-6-0 7800 or 'Manor' Class No. 7802 'Bradley Manor' and is preserved on the Severn Valley Railway.

Totally agree about the lamentable lack of LNER locomotives preserved. Only one A3 out of 78 is terrible, particularly knowing the popularity of all the Gresley Pacific's. Luckily I saw all of them during my 'trainspotting' days. :)

No, the A4's never ran backwards in normal service - would negate the streamlining somewhat! :)

You know that Eisenhower is over here at the moment right? It's been nicely repainted too.

Just hope the Americans look after it when they get it back. Was in a deplorable state on delivery to UK. Same goes for the Canadian custodians of Dominion of Canada :-/

I'm a Bulleid fan, as I'm in the old Southern Railway region and live 45mins from the No. 1 Preservation Railway, the Bluebell Railway - 'West Country/Battle of Britain' 4-6-2 Pacific are my particular favourites and Bluebell has West Country "SPAM Can" (otherwise known as 'Original Build' or 'Unrebuilt') 'Blackmore Vale' and Rebuilt BofB 'Sir Archibald Sinclair' - unfortunately both are currently on static display awaiting boiler work.

But I do have a soft spot for A3s and A4s and totally agree - one A3 out of 78 is terrible.

Now here's a question - is the only preserved A3 LNER No. 4472 'The Flying Scotsman'? The Scotsman's an A1 - actually Gresley's third A1 and the first one to be named, and was upgraded to A3 standard late in service.

Winston Churchill (at least I think it was, or some other Spam Can) is going through renevation at York. That I saw while I was there. I'm more of a LMS/LNER fan, though my parents took me to Didcot for my 5th birthday to see some good GWR engines. Bulleid had some interesting designs that look more like somethign you would find here in the States. Still think the Q1 looks cool though.

Good point about 4472. A technicality I suppose. Wouldn't mind seeing a privaterly funded A3 built. Scotman has had to many issues lately. And how much of it is really original at this point anymore?

I wish I had taken vacation to the UK this year and not last. Would have loved to see the great gathering. I saw photos of Eisenhower over here and it looked horrible. It looked like they painted the driving rods bright silver. It is sad, but I feel no one over here stateside grasps the importance of it or the other A4s. I'd say let England keep her if they brought her to her full glory and let her steam again.

They are called Pacifics over in the UK as well. Speaking of other movie trains.... I saw Olton Hall last year on the turntable at the NRM, though it is still painted in Hogwarts Red.

I honestly hate our steam engines over hear in the states. They were made for one pupose. Work. No thought was put into making them look elegant, save for the Hudsons and a few others. Still a shame the preservation scene isn't as popular as it is in England.

British Steam Locomotives - the closest man has come to creating a living machine; at least that's what I heard on TV on Monday night (Monster Moves - rescuing 2 "Churchills" from Turkey (Winston Churchill donated 25 Stanier 8Fs to Turkey in 1941 to encourage Turkey to remain Neutral - the Turks loved them and called them "Churchills" and they were only withdrawn from service in the '80's))

Alan, the cynic in me is suggesting both were only allowed to return to the UK for "The Gathering" on condition we refurbished them.

I don't know, I quite like the 4-6-6-4 Challenger; although I understand there's speculation that UP#3985 will never steam again now that UP have acquired Big Boy #4014 with the intention of returning that to steam. I also like the fact that UP never retired FEF-3 #844 and she's still running across the states as part of their Heritage program.

I agree. I love streamlines steam-- and we barely have them in museums-- much less run them.

I would LOVE to see the C&O streamlines 490 restored at the B&O museum in Baltimore - in operating condition!.

OK. Thanks. So this would be it?

Now, I know nothing about N scale euro steam.

Arnold, Flieschmann, anybody make this in N?

As we now live in Slovenia, I did not get to the great gathering, but friends sent pics and videos.

But as I said earlier, I am lucky to have seen all the east coast Pacific's and most of the other loco types in the UK when they were at work in the sixties. Not quite the same in preservation, as they are all kept do clean! :)

But the UK is blessed with a huge amount of engines still working or being restored, on main lines and the many heritage lines.

Your two primary companies for British N Gauge are Dapol and Graham Farish (Bachmann). The only good manor class released was by Ixion, which Dapol bought the tooling for. I think they are hard to find now though.

Yes they are. In fact, there's no mention of the Manor Class anywhere on the Dapol site.
I understand that back in 2010 Ixion discovered that the final production model was out of scale on the eve of shipping. When they finally shipped v2, they were worth the wait - wheel slip didn't occur until the 36th Coach was hooked up :startled: That's impressive as the 1:1 would've been struggling to pull 12.

At any rate, there are a lot of amazing engines coming out in the next year. Great time to model, or collect, British N. that Princess looks amazing.
