Any European Prototype Modelers out there?

What scale? I am wanting to do N Scale, but I am having issues finding anything past Eurorail Hobbies and Reynaulds. Unfortunately for me, the inflation has caught up to modeling regardless of the scale. HO would seem to be cost effective, but I am a bit cramped for space. N scale, 2x6ft would give me a decent starting point from which to work with. I was mainly thinking German, but a lot of the Steam locomotives from all over Europe interest me. There is the beauty and nostalgia of it all. Any help or pointers from anyone is greatly appreciated.

 

British N Gauge. I think their steam engines are beautiful. I buy from overseas, usually Hattons or Tails of Sheffield. It's not bad, depending on the exchange rate, and you don't pay VAT so you can knock 20% off the advertised prices.

 

I'd love to model the DB, European models cost quite a bit though.

 

Again though, British steam is in line with US prices. About $160 for a fully detailed engine.

 

Bavarian, as early a I can find in HO scale. Most of what is available is 1910 to 1920, but I managed to grab a few dating back to the 1860s. And of course the Trix der Adler set. Basically they inspired us (especially my wife) to model early railroading in N scale.

 

RENFE in N Scale, mostly late 1970's through early 1990's.

 

Funny that I should come across this thread. Just last night I threw together a quick track plan on the computer for a proposed 3 x 7 foot N scale layout to accomodate my growing collection of British N scale (N gauge across the pond) equipment. I've been fascinated with British railway modeling ever since a trip to the UK way back in 1978. I buy some of the British modeling magazines on occasion as well. It makes for a bit of change from my regular modeling and keeps things fresh.

I've always admired some of the streamlines Euro steam.

Never bought one- but thought about it.

 

Their is a certain mystique about British branch lines and mainline railways.

 

I don't know about being a prototype modeller, but I still would really love a Gresley A4 Pacific. I just wish someone would do the "Dominion of Canada".

 

It has been done in OO (HO) Scale. I imagine it will come soon in Dapol. They just released Dwight D. Eisenhower. I picked up Wild Swan when they released. They are spectacular N Gauge models.

Bachman & Hornby have both released "Dominion of Canada" in OO; the Hornby was a Limited Edition of 1000 units - and I missed out :crying: I personally think the Hornby model was the best.


As for Dapol releasing it in N? If they do, they'd be well advised to leave off the front coupler completely - the A4 doesn't do 'backwards'
Which scheme would she look best in? LNER Garter Blue or BR Green with Late Crest?

 

I meant they should be releasing Dominion of Canada sometime. They have already released the A4. It is amazing. I just take the front coupler out. And I beg to differ about backwards.... While on vacation last year and visiting North York Moor Railway, Bittern steamed past me with its rake of coaches tender first while I was on Sir Nigel Gresley. They have done it so far in each color. I bought Wild Swan below, they have done LNER Blue and BR Blue as well.
