Wow - I checked the date that I took this first picture - Jan '05, and I'm just now getting to back to working on the scene. It's going to be loosely based on Caliente, at the base of the north slope of Tehachapi pass - since I don't have near the real estate to do it in it's entirety, I'm just going to include some of the major elements - for those of you familiar w/ the area - Caliente and Tehachapi Creek, Caliente-Bodfish Rd, both railroad bridges, and eventually the dumpster lot and post office. Here's what it looked like in January (looking toward the second railroad bridge that crosses Tehachapi Creek and Cal-Bodfish Rd. The first bridge in my last photo spans the creek in the left of the scene) - Another of the same area - And here's the most recent work - the first bridge (which is the 3rd crossing of Caliente Creek) - The empty lot that the VW is driving by is where the Caliente Post Office will go. Jeff & Mike - the concrete culvert under the road is what I took pictures of on our last railfan extravaganza! LOTS of work left to do!
Looking good Dave. I know that feeling, it seems like I start on one area, and then see something new at the shop that makes me want to start on a different one! Hey, thats the fun of the hobby though, right? Never gets boring! GoSteelers (Quietly at that) ATSF Corwith Subdivsion
look's good Dave!!! So when are We going to start planning our next trip Maybe We can have a "TrainBoard Loop Day"
Looks good. I am not familiar with the area at all, so I appreciate the description. What is the white material you are using? I presume all the creek beds will be dry?
I need to build a curved girder bridge like yours. Could you get a closer pic of it, and where did you get the girders to build the bridge? If anyone has pics of bridges on a curve, please post them. I may take you up on the world's slowest modeler challenge. I'm one of the world's slowest car builders, so this may not be as big of a challenge as you think
Dave, Stop claiming to be the world's slowest modeller. I haven't started yet. Charlie [ December 08, 2005, 08:06 AM: Message edited by: E-8 ]
Flash - the white stuff is plain ol' plaster of paris - I'm old school - it's cheap and it works. Ryan - here's a close up. I built the girders out of sheet styrene and .040x.040 Evergreen strips, and just glued them to the side of the plywood subroadbed. I cut the bottom half of the plywood out of the bottom of the bridge, to make it thin enough under the bridge. I've built several different types of curved bridges on my layout - you can see them at my Railimages album - I've got some shots of some of them under construction in the 'construction' sub-album.
Another good picture of the curved girder bridge on the Belmont Shore. The girders are straight; the track on top is curved. One of my favorite views.
A little more progress on my MUCH smaller bridge - a little paint and ground foam. Still lots to do - more ground foam, shrubs, finish the road, guard rails on the road viaduct, crossing gates, ballast & track weathering, weathering on the bridge, paint the rocks...and all the other details...
Got the track ballasted, the inside bridge bracing installed, and some more scenery detailing... not quite ready for an SP moment but getting there...
