Just so you folks don't think I'm a Santa Fe bigot (although I am...), here is one of my favorite other models, a N scale Southern Pacific SD7 #5308 in Tiger Stripe: This is a stock recent run lightly weathered Atlas SD7, with Sunrise Enterprises detail parts added - the 'barrel can' Mars light and the steam generator details. Number 5308 was the original EMD SD7 demonstrator, and was purchased by SP. As such, it can be considered from a date of manufacture standpoint, the original "SP Cadillac" (although other SP SD7s were ordered in advance of SP's purchase of the EMD demonstrator). (Of course, the nickname 'Cadillac' was specific to only to SP SD7s and SD9s, and several other roads purchased SD7/9s as well). I do love the classic looks of the Southern Pacific SD7s and SD9s.
OC engineer JD How does the 4-10-2 run? I've been looking at getting one next year to add to my SP brass collection.
I ran into the same problem with my newly aquired Key MT-1. Found out, the pony truck was taking the majority of the weight off the drivers. I ended up putting very thin styrene shimms near each axle bushing under the gear cover plate. This allowed the axles to "droop" more and take the majority of the weight of the boiler. I went from hauling about 5 cars to 20. Another trick is to add weight to the inside of the boiler where you can. Most of the korean made Key imports have quite a bit of room in the boiler for weight. Do these locos come with traction tire option?
Black Widow Staging As I complete an operating session, all my head end power returns to staging for another session. I am changing over from the mid-diesel era to the Black Widow diesel era for this next session. Here is the lineup all set to go. I always think it is neat to see them all together. Notice the lone SD40 in the middle of the pack? SD40s did actually operate with Black Widow F7s, even if briefly. [Edit} Since there is a little interest, here is a "later" time period. (I knew this shot was in there somewhere.)
That's gotta be a dream? I've never seen that many clean SP locos in one spot! actually never seen two clean SP locos together outside of the paint shop....dave
Flash I see the M-K rebuild in there is there a way we can see it up close. Any Espee fan should love those 4 ugly ducklings (I wonder if those are still in Oakland Ca)
Here's pics of my SP cabeese, just for JD. I think I forgot a few, but that's most of them. George Hollwedel's MT two packs are really really nice, and make the regular run MT cabeese look like toys. The orange boxes make the clear boxes look like toys, and I scored two more orange boxes off ebay, for 62 bucks each. I hope my wife's lawyer doesn't see this pic.
BTW, the bright red caboose is the Petaluma and Santa Rosa #5. I built it from a Kadee kit. The kit on top is T&NO 279, but I also have an assembled one in that pile somewhere. There's also a SSW caboose, I wish MT would do more of those. They've done eleventy billion SP cabeese, but only 1 SSW.
Here's an SP moment....... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5vS9-Iuh28"]YouTube - Sugar Beet Train[/ame]
OK OC Engineer JD, now I'm real jealous. Nice backwards cab-forward  Did you get a chance to work the bugs out of your 4-10-2?
