Very nice Harold [IMG] We were having a really nice spell of late summer weather until two days ago - it is now raining very heavily non-stop and blowing a gale :( Not good photography weather!

I understand completely! :D We went from Indian summer, 80 degree days to ~ 5 inches of rain last weekend (much needed rain [IMG] ) In fact, it rained again Monday when I was traveling, probably the first day in many months when the camera did not leave the camera bag :( A couple of inches of rain forecast for tomorrow too... [Time to raid the archives [IMG] ]

    Harold,
I'll have to visit your site more offen! I had a few times. And all which from then till now, I'm sure you tripled it in size! HA! Which is good... Gives me more to look at! :D Plus certain loco's I'm looking for, I print out to have a copied picture to use as a guide line for modeling something specific! I've got quite a B&O, C&O, Western Maryland, Chessie System, and CSX archive going. I have each railroad in its own 3 ring binder in protective sleaves as well! Makes it handy to go thought looking for something I'd be currently modeling! [IMG]

Harold your photos, combined with the few that I have taken, are a great help.

[IMG] when Im whileing away the wee hours detail painting my rolling stock, as soon as I feel comfortable I will start tackling the engines. [IMG]

After I get a few detail parts I want to add to the engines . [IMG]

    Alan,
The Archive system I've put together is quite extensive! :D I have a B&O, C&O, Western Maryland volumes. One 3 ring binder with all Steam in, and another 3 ring binder with all Diesels in. In each binder of all the railroads, I have a different section for each different type steamer, or diesel. And all loco's are put in their section by numbering.. Such as the lowest numbers to the highest (like counting).

But this helps me alot in the shop, being I do alot of extensive detailing for a specific loco and custom painting and lettering... This is what I first began to do when I started my shop. I built the shop from seting day in and day out custom painting loco's and cars. Took on all the custom paint/decal work I could handle for a week and set a "goal" to have them done by Friday! Sometimes it layed over into the weekend but.. I got them done by the next week. I still work the custom painting/ lettering like this in the shop to this day! However, all the years I done that, I took and kept the stock in the shop so I had materials and so on for when I needed it and wasn't delayed. and then put some much funding back saved in the bank to buy tools for machine work and so on. So, I built my shop into what it is today from just custom painting and lettering and detail work!

I started painting and lettering in 1990 or 91. And let it ride like that till 1994 and then got into mechanics and machine work after that, and been at it ever since.. Sure times get slow, and all, I then fall back on a Carpentry side job, or home electrician work. And if all else fails... Autobody repairs!

But in the shop I like to have references at my fingertips when needed. So, I thought about printing out the pictures online and building a archive for the model work as a guide line. So, I have a picture of the real thing to model the scale one! I also, take alot of real cars and scratchbuild them, and freelance a paint scmeme on them. This is what my B&O MOW train is made from! I bought all kinds of boxes full of junk through the years, and put it back (stock piled) and then alittle at a time repaired this more or less "junk" to be in my B&O MOW. I repaired the cars, and then whatever I had to scratchbuild was done after I knew the cars would run as the were before I sunk alot of time and money into them. And once I got that determined I went on the do all thge scratchbuilding... I started this in 1989, Which is what got me the name I made for myself as a custom painter/builder. And then I started the shop in doing custom work like that.

    Harold,
You have no clue how many pictures I've printed out for my CSX archive! Being you have some really good shots of sides and all. Makes them good for modeling work.... I bet 50 percent or better of the CSX archive I put together is from your site! And some from northeast.railfan links to the other CSX archive! But yes Harold, your pictures are very helpfull! Not to mention fun to look at (Listen to this foamer ramble on) [IMG] I enjoy it!

Say.... Weren't the SD-18's made as hi-nose diesels? It sure looks like it and then they had cut the nose down for visability! Very close looking to the SD-7'9's....Bodies are very simular, besides that the 7/9's mostly were hi-nose most of their rostered careers! Not so sure of the SD-18's tho...

Those photos of 7308 and 5224 are superb! The Chessie System paint scheme looks great, so why does it never look so good on models, I wonder? Maybe it needs careful weathering to make it look realistic, and less toy-like.

The locomotives are in storage, but they look clean and in good condition.

I think only C&O bought SD18's, and they were all low nosed. They also rode on Alco Tri-mount trucks from trade-ins.
