Yeah, I started at the beginning. Excellent work all around, you really have talent. I'm very impressed by your ballasting in particular.

Thanks TRyburn. I don't know that it's talent so much as just spending a lot of time stealing other guy's techniques :)

    - - -

I was hoping to have more done on this scene prior to posting about it, but I've just been busy and not getting much done on the layout.

It was tricky cutting up the rubber rock and reattaching it together with CA. Next I will add sculptamold to contour the top and bottom of the rock face. After that: more detailing, foliage, weathering, etc. The foam at the bottom of the rock face will support an additional rock face that will be 'terraced' out, and transition into the banks of the creek.

    Noah,
Have you worked on the layout recently? There's been no updates since February.

    Thanks
    Gary

This is a super thread bump. I haven't updated in a while, but since Whistle Post went away, I figure I might as well resurrect this thread.

Anyhow, here's a quick snapshot from the latest work on the Portola Valley RR. I will try to keep the updates more frequent.

A while back, I created the cement pad for the future Long Valley Lumber kit:

And more recently, I built the main road highway through the layout:

This was shot yesterday. It shows the first iteration of painting and weathering the road. I plan to add another coat of paint, then re-weather it, and add detailing & striping.

Random shot, with a peak at some of the ground cover that I had been working on:

This shows more of the recent ground cover that I added, and the first handful of trees on the layout.

    And another...

    Best regards,
    Noah

Rick- thank you! I heard you couldn't make it to the Railfair in Roseville. I cruised through it rather quickly, but I did snap a shot of your modules. Looking great!

Glad to see some updates on your layout. The road is especially well done. And from a distance it's difficult to tell that it's Unitrack. Hope to see more regular updates!

    Thanks a lot, gents!

I feel like the layout is starting to come together -for being a newby layout. I have certainly learned a lot.

    My remaining tasks include:
    • Finishing landscape textures
    • Adding many more trees
    • Pasture fencing
    • Road detail & striping
    • Re-surface the lumber mill pad (I'm unhappy with the current color)
    • Build/install waterfront structures -MTL Cannery, pier walls/pilings, boats, detail, lighting, etc.
    • Build/install Long Valley Lumber kit, detail, fencing, lighting, etc
    • Telephone poles + EZ-line
    • Pour magic water

Tips and suggestions are always appreciated!

    -Noah

I have this kit sitting on my work bench, as yet unbuilt. I really like west coast sea scenes, especially Pacific Northwest. I'll be quite intetrested to follow along how you create this setting.

I'll be interested to see how I create the scene as well! lol. I have expectations for my modeling that are far beyond my skill level.

I have the MTL Waterfront Hotel built already as well. I'd like to add another couple of buildings in addition to those two. I'm thinking a little cafe, and bait & tackle shop.

...older shot of the Waterfront Hotel
    [IMG]

And this is my little stash of waterfront kits. I'm not planning on using the built pier though.

Haha. I definitely consider myself a newbie -perhaps less of a newbie than when I started. But I've really only been into the hobby as an adult for a year and a half. I appreciate your kind words!

Peter! How are you doing? How is baby #3? Yeah, it's a bummer about Whistle Post. I always hoped that thread of mine would be around to help other beginners. Do you know the back story on what happened? Where did you talk to Bob? Wish him well for me. How's your layout coming along?

    Noah:

As I've said many times in the past elsewhere, your layout looks fantastic. You've really progressed in almost two years. BTW, contgrats on the Giants winning the World Series. That manager Bruce Bochte is superb. Am glad you had a great summer. From an old friend.....:cool:

Baby Joshua is doing amazing, turning 3months tomorrow. As far as I know the owner of whistle post past away and his wife didn't have the cash of know how to keep it going. It just shut down about a month ago. As for Bob in model railroad forum mostly but he posts here too.

As for my layout, slow progression as yours Lol. Here is a link to my YouTube blog I started.
