    I like staying married

Those shots are pretty bad for someone trying to sell items in that price range. That's the quality of photo I would expect if someone were trying to auction off a happy meal toy for five or ten bucks, but not for a $1000 car.

I think if my wife were to find out that I had spent $1000 on a single container in N-scale that whatever remains of mine were later found would fit inside a container that size.

Since I like staying married I stay away from stuff like this, no matter how collectible. I like playing with my trains, not collecting them.

LOL!!! (Okay really... I only wanted 'LOL' as the post but I had to increase it to more than 10 characters. Truely a great comparison!)

I have a UP passenger train set that I picked up in the 80's made by ROWA. It is a total of 9 cars long. It is almost mint condition with only one flaw on a roof and if I really tried I think I still may have the original box for it. Supposedly it was made right before the company went under and the molds were destroyed. I think there were only like 150 made. I doubt even for that I could get $1,000.

Still laughing all the way... I really really hope no one bids on this!!!

    :)

I am glad you liked that.

I showed the thing to my wife last night and she agreed that if I were to purchase it that I would be in trouble but that I would actually be saving her money in the long run because all that would be left would be buried in that little container... in the backyard... and forgotten forever...

Perhaps the only thing more rare than that container is a person willing to pay $1000 for it.

Maybe we ought to get some customs dogs or some immigration authorities to inspect the contents of those containers?

Mmmm..... or they could be filled Krugerrands similar to the movie Lethal Weapon Two?

You know what they say "At first you don't succeed try again." Or in this case realize that your price is too outrageous and no one in there right mind will pay that much.

Someone bid on the Deluxe coaltrain. The one that wasn't too much above MSRP. They'll probably get it for $750. It'd only be about $600 from Wig Wag, though I doubt they have 58 cars left.

Lets see I could sell my entire fleet of loco's and cars and get 4 of those containers, but then I have nothing to run them with. Of coarse this would save me a lot of space and I would not need that huge layout I have always dreamed of.

Somewhere out there, a decimal point is lost, looking for a home.

Why is everyone putting this seller down. He has something that is extremely rare and believe it or not, there are many collectors out there. How many of you have paid $500 or more for a brass loco and those are not even really that exclusive. I paid $1000 for a set of OMI Salt Lake City Olympic Torch Relay locos because I really like them and there are only 50 sets in existence.

Several years ago, I was very heavy into redline Hot Wheels. Did you know that the record price paid for a Hot Wheels is $74,000? The buyer was a wealthy real estate broker and he bought it becasue it was the only one in existence because it was a prototype. Guess what; less than a year later, another one showed up. He paid $40K for that one.

Everyone has someone that they are really looking for to complete a collection. Maybe this is one of those items...how many MT cars have sold for 1K or 2K or more?

Ah, but a brass loco can cost that much because:

    1.) It actually runs.
2.) It usually contains some pretty accurate detail work.
    3.) It's made of brass.

Yes, brass locos are expensive and I probably can't afford one, but at least there is SOME justification of the price there.

A container is a hollow block of plastic with some painting/printing on it. Like I said, that $1000 price tag is missing a decimal point in the middle.

Bet he didn't buy it on the bay though....

I look at this way, would you be willing to trade those wonderful SD70M's (they are really nice and impossible to find now by the way) for that single container ? I sure wouldn't. He's already wasted $20+ on listing fees for the auction. Something like this may be better suited for the NSC auctions were you find the serious collectors and not eBay where we have the bargain hunters like me hanging out.

Brian, that particular Redline Hot Wheel was not on ebay, but I saw several others for $15K or more on eBay and they sold. When you get into the collector thing, many times you are paying more for rarity than the actual substance of an item. Do I think anyone will bid $1K for that container; no, I don't, but who knows what will happen.

I agree that a brass locomotive has much more to it than a plastic container, but how exclusive is that brass loco? Many people buy brass locos and put them in a drawer and never run them, because they are collectors. Often collectors buy the high dollar piece to complete a collection or because it is really hard to find. That is what this container is to some collector out there; extremely difficult to find.

My point is I don't think anyone on this board has the right to judge or put down someone that has listed something on ebay. It is their money that they are paying for listing fees, not yours. We all hear about the bad experiences on ebay, but how often does everyone tell about the good experiences? Personally, I love ebay because I have things in my collection that I would have never found in a lifetime of hunting for them, not to mention I have more than a couple of things that I didn't even know existed without ebay. I have had more than 2000 transactions on ebay and can count on one hand the number of really bad experiences that I have had.

These are just my opinions and nothing more. Please, no one take offense because none is intended; just putting in my 2 cents.

I wasn't out to put down the seller. I was poking holes in his presentation. If you want that kind of money for something you should probably take slightly better pictures, i.e., not on your mattress pad and not out of focus; and then have someone edit your listing for grammar, punctuation, and so on, just so you look like you care. The first sentence where he says he just happened on this thing makes me think he bought it for 25 cents at a flea market. If I were him and I was looking for $1000 I would NOT tell the world that I had "just happened on this thing."

He is free to sell it at whatever price he can find a buyer to pay. That is his business. Much like if I go to a store where things are overpriced, I reserve the right to balk at the price if I think it is outlandish. I wouldn't go so far as to send him a comment and tell him that because I don't think that is really called for nor appropriate.

My wife would still stuff my remains in that container were I to buy it, whether it is a fair price for a collector's item or not.

First of all, whats wrong with him saying he stumbled across it?? You think he is the first to find something valuable and turn it for a profit?? Sounds to me like your a little jealous...

I was hoping to find a thread on this item, it really is begging for criticism.

First of all, I'm not a hardcore N scale collector, but everytime I check out the NSC web site, it seems they're "adjusting" their opening bids on items that have long been considered rare, and this is for Kadee/Micro-Trains items which could probably be labeled the back on which the collector market was built. The item in question is not Kadee/Micro-trains related - something the investor might want to take into consideration.

Secondly, the item was originally produced by PWRS, who have done plenty of special run N scale, but I am unaware of any of this being collector type material, my interpretation of their stuff is runner type material.

But, as they say, there's a sucker born every minute.
