FVM has all of those sample locomotives on their website and all they could've done was change the cab and it'll still make money instead of push out the NS Gevo unit with the wrong headlights?
I actually agree with you. I haven't touched a Kato RS-2 with it's too high radiator fan since the introduction of the Walthers/LL unit. Before that, however, I had four. I needed RS-2's and Kato was the only game in town. Still have a number of Atlas RS-3's, even though they have always been too late a version for my purposes. Hopefully the Bachmann HO early RS-3's will work their way to our scale. Till then it's Atlas or nothing. I live in ALCO country, so nothing us not an option. The local CP(ex-D&H) line has lots of NS haulage. Mostly GEVO's If I wanted to model the line, I either go with good enough, or not at all. Modeling something other than what you want isn't much fun. I'm not trying to sound contentious. I deal with the world as it is, not as I wish it to be. But that's just me. Others are free to spend their money as they choose. Frank
Manufacturing is always a fickle thing because costs dictate a lot about what can be done. In this case, I think FVM could have made a run that had the correct cab for NS and I'm sure the nose headlight is not only on NS GEVOs so they could have had a run that made this correct. Another option is to not have three road numbers per road which would lower costs, though by how much I do not know. FVM is the new kid on the block but this does not excuse them from mistakes. They are learning and people should hope that in the future they will do a run that will be correct. Has there been any information on how well FVM has done with all their locomotive runs so far?
I saw your avatar and thought you were a BNSF modeler. I done 5 SD70mac-t1 and did not feel bad cutting all those UP long hoods while doing them.:tb-biggrin:
Ironically I scabbed the flares off an NS SD70M....The BNSF thing, well I like the logo and since my road isnt in the avatar list I decided to use it.
What is funny??? I don't get your humor. Alot more to change on the GEVOs than these Kato -9's if your tring to make a point. Scott
Would mark4design's NS cab conversion fit on the FVM's? 122 GE C40-9W cab and wide nose - NS type (high headlight). Fits Kato C44-9s $22.00
Steve,One would need to compared the -9W and ES44 cab..Could be a good solution or stand in IF the cab fits the FVM ES44 frame. Of course slicing a $119.00 locomotive sends chills up my spine and something I would not care to tackle at my age and especially with the limited use of my once dominant right hand.
Boy, you guys have it easy. Try to imagine what us steam heads have to go through to get road specific details for our treasures! You'd be looking at alterations a lot more in depth than a simple headlight placement, and retail of any starting steam loco is way more than 120. I think we're seeing too much of a trivial debate over what FVM "could" have done. If you want my opinion, be glad they even released something in NS colors in the first place! Would you guys rather have a NS colored model with an incorrect headlight, or no NS colors at all? Beggars cant be choosers.
Mark:I think we're seeing too much of a trivial debate over what FVM "could" have done. -------------------- Actually its not what FVM could have done its more like what the should have done instead. Think of it this way..Its like lettering a Santa Fe 1950 class 2-8-0 for PRR.. Those high headlights is NS signature like a belfry firebox was to the PRR.
Look, seriously, in this day and age there are so many mods and phases to modern locos, it's unlikely that any model is going to be 100% accurate. It all comes down to what YOU as the buyer will accept. I think it was smart for Matt to offer the NS GEVO - even with the compromises - because to a lot of people it's just fine. But I personally think those compromises go too far - so I won't buy one. This in no way takes away from the overall success of the GEVO project - a stunning achivement for a new company! Not everyone has the interest, time, ability and/or skills to start cutting models apart. I'm impressed by those who do. But I'd actually rather spend time/money on other things. And I do believe these discussions help manufacturers see what is "tolerable" and what is "intolerable" as far as compromises.
I was just saying that FVM have the tools to create the NS units due to the sample set they unveiled at the trainshow and on their website. So your welcome to go and look for your self instead of being a smart...? I mean your simply missing the point of what I'm saying? Thanks Anthony G.
