A lot cleaner than my installs! Yes, we all make that first mistake on a hard wire install (ask me how I know! LOL).
your weathering looks pretty tame, not like mine.....

Not a purchase but a thank you gift from a friend a week ago. It is a Kato EMD DS90/43 MAC. I have 18" radius track and this engine is a tad bit large for that. All of the engines I have are GP9's & 35's. Maybe I will try and trade it later on for an engine of equal value. Until then, it will stay in the box or on a display shelf.

Thanks Eagle. I happened on the way I do it messing around one night. I use a rail painter and chalk. I dab the rail pen where I want rust and immediately dust it with a dark rust chalk. It comes out looking way more pitted than just using chalk or paint alonE. I like the effect because you get a range of rust color on the spot.

its easy to get carried away though!! LOL
I've seen youtube videos of using Mat Medium and chalk, but I like the brown layer under the chalk. I'm fixing to do a ACF hopper car and really rust it up.

I think I'm going to have to try that technique, Dale. Sounds easy and looks great!

None of my locomotives will be that rusty, but sounds like a great method for some hoppers ;)

    Alan,

I had a hard time with the first one I did. Not the weather part, the fact that in taking a nicely painted $200 dollar locomotive and making it look old and beat-up! The method would work great for hoppers. I've seen some ACF groan hoppers here that were so bad you could barely read anything on them.

Eagle, go for it, I used a rail painter the I had used when I installed my track work, I bought pastel chalks at Hobby Lobby. You can use q-tips to dust with. I grind the chalks on a piece of sandpaper. A real high tech operation! LOL

Post pictures down in the "What's on your workbench" thread, I'd love to see them. Maybe we ought start a thread called "Show us your rust bucket"!

    Have a good day guys!

BTW, I'm finishing up a string of grain hoppers and I will post pictures in the Workbench thread.

Whenever people talk about weathering I can't resist posting this link to an old old web site. It's been out there for over 10 years.

    http://www.missing-lynx.com/rareworld.htm

The guy is a premier military modeler in spain. His articles are poorly translated from spanish, so sometimes it's like a literal word for word translation. But the articles really go into teaching modelers how paint works; especially color theory and how different layers of paint interact to create different colors.

He came up with the idea of layering paint to create optical illusions. So if you want a rust spot you dab on a patch of primer and then dab a bit of rust color into that. To the eye it looks like the layers have rubbed through, but really it's the reverse of that as to how the paint is layered on.

Hereis a sample of his weathering. The canvas tarp is pretty well done as is the tire dirt. Granted this is a large scale model.

Granted he does military stuff, but his techniques are worth checking out.

And yes, I am way off topic. Maybe I should repost this as link to a new discussion?

If you wish, please do. Probably best in the Inspection Pit.

I recall a topic, within the past couple of years, (?), where some YouTube video was linked. This was by a fellow doing armor, and showed his painting and weathering techniques, which were something to behold. Could this be the same source?

I love weathering stuff!!! Although, I do agree it IS a little nerve racking to do it to a new $200 engine! LOL! Here is a pic of some of my covered hoppers. The 3rd from the left started with the same color as the last one. JMS

Need to do that to my grain hoppers. I will study photographs and try to copy them to get realistic weathering.

Great modeling for sure, so many people cant stand Graffiti, but is just a fact of life in railroading. Some of these folks are wasting an incredible talent painting railroad cars LOL. A great job of contemporary modeling..
Thanks for taking the time to photograph and show your work. So much great modeling going on here, I just cant keep up with all the posts.

Thanks guys! I do all my graffiti by hand. Some is from real railcars... some of it comes from the abyss I call my mind. LOL! Maybe, I will start a new thread with all of my railcars that I have "tagged". JMS

My SP&S Z class Challenger #910 (not new) on my new roller stand (which is new). The big girl is full brass and DCC but everything worked okay. She also got serviced since it's been a while since she ran. Yes, in the first pic, that IS a old London Underground car.
