What I am planing on doing for the tender is using the stock tender and somehow adding the 3 axle trucks to it. I am also going to kitbash it to an oil tender.
Jerry, what you need is one of these... see attached Seriously, I am also trying to figure out how to do the the Santa Fe standard six-wheel tender truck; it has a short, 8'-4" wheelbase and 33" wheels - similar to the Bachmann six wheel Vandy truck but with different sideframes. Maybe the Vandy truck would be a good start and give us all wheel pickup. I'll let you do the heavy lifting... Good luck, Otto
Otto, thats what I am leaning towards till I can find a tender like that. Using the Vandy tender trucks for now. (Again....close enough. And Much closer then the 2 axle trucks!)
Jerry, AT&SF called the color "Tarpon Grey". There are many formulas; my last mix was Floquil, two parts graphite to one part old silver. The stack and front end throttle cover, if any, also get the Tarpon treatment. Otto
Didn't do much on her today. Blackened the brass so when I airbrush the model I can go with light coats. (Thanks again Tony!)
Still going to add more piping above the drivers on this side, a line to the whistle and one to the bell.
Jerry check out ultimatenscale for the tender conversion. I'm planing on using one of these for a 2-8-0 tender conversion. Hope this might help. Also when can I send you mine to do :tb-biggrin:. It's looking great. Ultimate N Scale model railroad conversion parts and loads
For this I used PolyScale Silver with a wash of Neolube. It's not as blue in person as it is in the picture. Here was my reference shot - http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2179198122/sizes/o/in/photostream/
Ah so here's where you've been hiding. I've been missing you on your layout thread. Nice work, I don't think I'll ever get that detailed. No close-ups on my pike only wide shots allowed.
Very nice Jerry! It's cool to see this unit get so many make overs. It really is a beautiful steamer!
