Arrgh. :) Conversation turned to classic cars and I posted a few photos, then realized I shouldn't mess up Wil's thread, so I deleted my post. Well, we can't delete posts here, so three dots have to stand.

Hey, just noticed the extra exhaust stack on the 61-what's that for?

If memory serves me, I seem to remember it was exhaust for a heater.

    It's a Watchman heater.

It's basically an oil-fired block heater - the same as an old-school home oil furnace - for locomotives that have to be turned off in cold weather where there are no heated facilities to store them in. A lot of switchers had that option, depending on where they were assigned (like the boonies, way past where Daniel Boone lost his mukluks...;)).

The Great Western Railway of Colorado ran steam late and happily, and at least two of their locomotives are in operation today in the east. There may be others. 2-8-0 No. 60 serves on NJ's Black River & Western RR and 2-10-0 No. 90 serves on PA's Strasburg RR. Both were acquired in the later 1960s.

8444 for the WIN! Also, those Redbird CB&Q/C&S units in an earlier photo and the GN Glacier Green boxcar in the background of the last one. Nice catch!
