This photo is for those who have shown interest in my current project of 57' AP Spine Cars. By weekends end I am hoping to have all of these Seven sets cleaned and airbrushed including the trailers. The only items I have not crafted yet is the etched trailer and Spine details. That I will work on next week on Turkey holiday. Can't forget decals too!

My how priorities change . I completed the RTV molds on the 16 axle and casted a few parts. Today I got two ready and airbrushed the red and black sections. All in gloss to get ready for KRL decals. Still need to paint the main deck white and the tie downs and weld plates in red.

The transformer is the model master and has not been molded yet for casting.
Once the two are done I will continue on with the 57' Spines and trailers.
    Enjoy!

Now the show season has finished and Christmas is out of the way I can get back to doing some modelling. The last two shows of 2016 Shoeburyness and Manchester were both really busy and Shasta ran faultlessly at both. In long form at Manchester the organisers had set it up so that both sides were viewable which prompted a lot of conversation with the show visitors.

On the USA front I'm working on a pattern for the DDOX 6 axle tank transporter car. I'm looking at having some cast in white metal in the future and Andy at Z-panzer is threatening to do an M1 Abrams to go with them.

On the U.K front I'm concentrating on track-planning 'Tapton Junction' and building up representative stock. As I've mentioned before through the 70s to the 90s it was a really busy spot for railfanning with a wide variety of different trains passing through. Helping me in this are a couple of 3d designers. Stonysmith has created one of the 21 ton Iron ore tipplers that were a common sight anywhere near steelworks in the U.K. By American freight car standards these are tiny!

From the dimensions I supplied to Stonysmith the first sample was too small to get some 'Full Throttle wheels under so he has blown it up a bit and I've ordered a couple of the modified ones to have another go

The period I'm modelling is after the introduction of the HST 125s but before the Class 47 loco hauled passenger trains were replaced. Ivanf has done some Mk 1 coaches on Shapeways and I finally got around to painting some. These are done in the 'Intercity Executive ' livery to match the resin cast 47 and use the recently introduced underframe 3d printed in Black Strong flexible and sat on bogies lifted from the JR 485 EMU centre cars

I had a bit of a disaster with the kitchen car when applying the gloss lacquer prior to putting the stripes on, The spraying turntable with the coach on fell off the workbench. this left a large crack along the toplights of the windows on one side. "Clucking Bell" I said to myself as I surveyed the damage but then a from the very deep recess of my mind I remembered that back in the 80's British Rail had plated over most of the windows on one of these to make a cinema coach so that conversion is well underway and I'll report on that later.

In the foreground can be seen some series 2 Land Rovers. These are also Shapeways designed by Exlibris and are exquisite. printed in two parts with the seats and floors cast into the chassis section

I was so pleased with these that I have ordered a set of his Renault 5s as well

The coaches look equally good behind the Class 86 (also Ivanf) finished in Virgin livery

Hi I started a new modeling project: Berwick steel gondola.

The first body shell (designed in Sketchup) is printed in HDA by Shapeways. Next will be printed in FUD. I am still working on the detail parts, like ladders and platforms.
    Trucks are MTL.

That looks great. I just bought a couple of FUD "bathtub gons" which look to be ACF's. Looking at your model, the rib arrangement lends itself to being ACF as well but I may just not have a sufficient view to tell. The ACF's have the alternating thick/thin ribs versus the Berwicks having a slightly varied version of that. I want to model the UFIX cars, which included both manufacturers among their consists.

Are you planning to do etched metal for the ends? My one thought with the FUD cars I bought is that worst case I could shave off the end details, cast the body in resin (ending up with something like what you are showing in the photo) and then adding the etched ends. I have some etched ends in N-scale that I thought I might use as a starting point.

Not a project I plan on working on for some time though. Buying the FUD cars was sort of "hedging my bets" in case the designer pulled them from Shapeways and I didn't have any other options. And honestly they're pretty good. If they're still available and I have good luck in testing with trucks/couplers then I'll likely purchase them outright. Easy and the fidelity is good enough.

I am working on the detail parts. I will have them etched eventually. I am still figuring out how to do the brake wheel stand... The brake wheel will be etched, maybe I will use a simple styrene stand.

Been really busy at work over the last few weeks and also been setting up a greenhouse to grow a wide variety of Chilli peppers (just fancy having a go at things like Chocolate Habeneros etc) so modelling time has suffered a bit but over the last couple of weeks got back into things. Jeff at Shawmut had kindly offered me some unfinished stonysmith 3D printings for the DM&IR U31 iron ore hoppers and some more ladle cars to add to my collection and once they arrived from my folks I got out the spray gun and got stuck in. I already have some Roy Stevens 70T iron ore hoppers finished in Nickel Plate colours but wanted something more modern when Republic is run in 1990s era

I wanted these to be close coupled so mounted Tenshodo couplers directly to the body and put MTL trucks under.

The colour scheme is an imaginary one that proposes that Greenbriar took over the management of the ore fleet

I might put some yellow reflective stripes down the side at some stage

However, it wasn't just USA ore cars on the workbench!

With a five pack of the classic British rail 27 ton iron ore tippler I was able to start to put together a more realistic rake. These tended to run in block trains in the 1960/70s.

To make these more realistic I have used N Scale Scalelink screw couplings typical of British stock and Full Throttle 33" wheels. Most of the wagons are painted in faded BR bauxite (Humbrol enamel) with a couple left in original condition.

These really need some additional weight and I'm going to cast some dummy loads in resin with Tungsten power mixed in.

Seen on the high line behind the blast furnace
    [IMG]

I'm hoping to finish a video on assembling these over the next few days and getting it onto my youtube and will add a link soon

I am getting out of a lengthy outage season at work and will have more time to play with my hobby soon. The Spines and the HD Depressed flats are still on the kitchen table awaiting attention.

    Hi all,

I could get a Märklin 4-6-0 as part of a Christmas Train set and started to modernize it.
At first I changed the tender, Märklin too, but with MTL-trucks. Plan to add power pick up for trucks.
Regarding the loco itself I will change cab roof, cylinders and some other details.
