T.H.E. G.E.O.R.G.E. ---- Nice work and video. One question for you. Are you using sliders (rail polishers) in your trains or do you have a "track cleaning train" ? ? ? Carl
Uh oh. Some day we may lose him. He'll step into the old RV/layout house, and refuse to ever come out again.
I gotta model me one of these in N Scale !! My son and daughter-in-law work for RoundMountain Gold Mine. It is an open pit gold mine in RoundMountain, Nv. Ownership: 50% Kinross, 50% Barrick Gold Corporation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_Mountain_Gold_Mine Gold mining here goes back to the early 1900's. On our second day of visiting my son ( lead communications tech for the mine ) and daughter in law ( head geologist for the mine ) we got a personal tour of the mine and their respective work areas. It was a great tour. On our 3rd day there...my son took me golfing ( BTW...I beat him by 2 strokes and I havent golfed in 6 years! ) Anyways....Outside the clubhouse I spotted this old ore car on static display My son told me he was there when the car was found a few years back. He explained that back in the 1900's the mine was a tunnel mine. These cars where used by the miners to haul the ore out. The present day mine operations blew up the old tunnels so they could strip the ore in open pit operations. One day the H U G H Komatsu shovel.... was loading the B I G haul trucks half way down the pit..... It scooped up a big shovel full of ore and this ore car and its tracks fell out of the shovel !! Operations where halted...management was called...pictures where taken...and the mining company hauled the car and track over to the clubhouse for display. Now as far as the model...other then being so small the car body itself wont be that hard to make. (I estimate it is 2 1/2 feet wide, 4 feet long, and about 2 1/2 feet tall). The track should also be a simple thing...probably just wire on some sticks. The problem may be the ore carwheels. By my estimate they arent over 15 inches in diameter. The unusual spoke configuration may be a PITA and maybe not able to be modeled :-( I plan to put the ore car and track behind THE Train Museum in JeansValley...facing the aisle. The backstory will be similar to the true story other then it came from a mine up in the mountains just outside of JeansValley. All 3 of my kids have their jobs represented on my layout in some form
Neat story and photos. BTW, your daughter-in-law compared to your son look like that itty-bitty ore car compared to that humongous ore hauler. Though I suspect she is fully in control of that situation...LOL
LOL...actually....thats me and THE Wife by that haul truck tire ;-) I'm 6'6'' tall and she is 5'1" tall...
Hey G.E.O.R.G.E....Micro Engineering has an ore cart already http://fiferhobbysu770.corecommerce.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=12993
Yea....me too !! My son drove us down to the pit floor. Along the way we passed lots of haul trucks climbing the 10% grade out of there. We saw old timbers sticking out of the walls from the old mine shaft shoring material. Wanted to grab a piece and bring it home. Son wasnt so sure about getting out of the company truck with all that heavy equipment running around though...LOL
Ordered a 2 pack from my fav etailer Fifer Hobby ! Sorry I didnt check you guys out first Mike and Robbin...my bad :-( Didnt even think to check if anyone even made such an ore car in N...woulda thunk it...LOL
While the dust settles...I have been working on my Fuel Distribution Center...nothing fancy here ! The tanks have 'floating roofs' as is common practice for fuel holding tanks Just used some old sprues for piping. Some old weather stripping for the 'berm'. Still have to run some track up behind it and wait for some decent tank cars *coughTBcough ;-)
We have been plotting where THE Wife wants her buildings to go in "Jeans Valley". Also got "Main Street" and "Highway69" basically where they will be going. An Overview....
