Yeah...i know, I have been doing a lot of on-line reading about West Virginia Logging and other things like pulp and coal. I don't think i want to put the coal and pulp somehow into the layout. I did see that several of the logging and mine rr's used wyes instead or turntables. Need opinions about the way i have changed the right side There is one track that is for programming. There is a part of the wye that has two siding tracks and i saw pictures of that. Kinda like that but want to see what you think. The rest has stayed the same as before i added the wye and removed the turntable. I may have to fudge some of the curves but i think it is workable. I maybe off topic but wonder if any of you think i should maybe see where to put a Pulp or Mine on the plan and maybe where? I still want to see it stay kinda simple. I like that wye better than the turntable myself. I am thinking about the Coal Mine...

I have to say I am just a little lost on where the wye is. It looks like you've got part of it and maybe the rest continues off the picture.

In any case, lots of prototype logging roads had both of these. Oregon-American, for example, had a wye basically big enough for turning locomotives near their mill in Vernonia, but a turntable up at Keasey, which was only about 8 or 9 miles away. (Interestingly, that turntable is now in the yard at Albany, Oregon.)

I like wyes, and after seeing what Charlie Comstock has done with his wye at Oakhill I started sketching up my own design for a wye.

Sorry about that. My printer is giving me issues. Can't seem to get it darker amd it is small or the image is not fitting the frame. Its about 5 years old so it maybe going to die.Try the one i just posted and see if you can tell about it. Dan

Got it. Before, the top of the layout was clipped off. I can see it all, now.

That wye should work just fine, and from a model railroad perspective you've really economized on the trackage that you need - you haven't made a wye that needs to have a bunch of dedicated trackage for itself.

Yep, I saw this on a logging in West Virginia picture and it showed how it started and in overhead shots you could see how it came together. I kinda copied it. The two fiddle tracks in the middle are for working on cars or engines i guess. Maybe parking cars going to another carrier. Not sure It was shown on the pictures but no explanation As to what they were for so guessing. On one end it went to the lumber mill and one went to a Coal Mine and the other connected to WM and the end that went to the logging/lumber mill also went and connected to C&O. I don't know if i should try and put some kind of Coal mine or something like that on the layout or not. If i do, I have no idea where on the layout to put it. I have plenty of time to work up plan that will give me what i am looking for.
I am not sure what is more fun.., Working on a plan, Building the plan onto a layout or running the trains on it?? Dan

While i am here, i was thinking about a coal mine on the layout and was thinking about a picture placed on the wall behind and maybe a little of a real mill and one track behind a part of the mountain. Its just a idea... Could still load there with open gondolas and would give something else to see. Any ideas or other things to think about? Have a shot but the printer is giving me he!!.... Guess it is dying on me,As good as i can get to show, Dan

In West Virginia I could certainly see a logging road also serve a mine. I don't know much about coal mining modeling.

Like you said, West Virginia was loaded with them. I figure if i can keep the work behind a piece of mountain i can just show one track and hide it so you don't have to place switches and sidings. I was looking at a article about how to hide with pictures that fake them out with a Picture placed on the background to give the illusion that there is a bigger plant than there is. Will place the front or top of the mine to add more realism to the scene. The rest will be the picture and then just have to blend foreground to background. I am giving up the idea of a pulp plant. They had several in West Virginia but i think the coal mine will be all i will add. I will just add the pulp wood to the sawmill and have the cars sent to the interchange. That should work but want to make sure that i am not screwing up a good plan over a bad idea. If there is changes to the plan let me know, Dan:tb-smile:

I was looking at a couple of shots of that Wye and one of the coal & Lumber company's and saw the Spruce Wye. I am wanting to do a bit of that Wye. Also am thinking about changing the name to "The Loop & Lookout Coal & Lumber Co. R.R. It was a real R.R. line, A branch but I like it! I can show the Town of Spruce, West Virginia. Some of you may want to copy or whatever you want. You can see the Now and Then. Not much of the town exists anymore. A real Ghost town. I think i stumbled onto a good name for sure. It, like Spruce are both long gone...:tb-cool:

Wow. I knew Spruce existed, from discussions about the Cass Scenic, but had no idea there'd ever been so much railroading at that site. Now I am even more curious. What a great site to model!

That was the shot that made me do mine with a wye! I almost wish i could have room to do that wye the way it was! The solid parts are the way it is now. They plowed the old track and railroading stuff under and ran the track one track right thru the place. I found a few other pictures if you are interested I think i have the link so let me check, Dan

I have two different ideas going here that will require some modifying of the layout but think it should be there as there was at the very least 50/50 in the state. I am talking about a coal mine. Another thing is i am going to be changing the name of the layout. The new name is from a real R.R. not to far from Spruce. It got swallowed up by elk river coal and lumber R.R. Small Branch line called, get this, "The Loop and Lookout R.R.". I can put a lookout in any number of places on the mountain. The R.R. was for a coal mine. But i am guessing that it could have also handled lumber too. I will get a shot of the plan later today or tonight. Have to help a friend to set up a new printer and they always want to feed you so it could be a bust today. I wish that you could get the plan from RTS 8.0 to the post without printing the plan and then scanning it back in as a jpeg. Here in the rv, I don't have a place for a printer here in the rv. I have to take it out from its parked place and drag it over to where i have the computer and then print and then unhook and put back in its place. Anyway, I like the new name better and I will get the plan soyou can give feedback to it later, Dan:tb-smile:

Something that i haven't put into the plan is the trailer is 8 foot wide outside. I made the plan for 7 foot interior. I will have a little more room on that side with the Wye. Even say 6 inches would be good. I just don't know how wide inside but it will give me a few more inches i hope. I don't think there will be any other changes made as i really like that plan. Dan, I like the revised plan, and that's certainly good news on having an extra bit of dimension. I wouldn't make any radical changes to the plan, but you could always lengthen a scene a bit to take up the additional space.

I agree! I don't know how much so i may have to wait till i can get the trailer finished. That may be awhile. The computer is still acting up and needs to be first. The truck next and layout...last....sucks.......:tb-sad:
