Rock Island and NYC on the same train, talk about your back to the future moment!!!! Great catch and video Buddy!
Yeah... just a few bangs with the mallet and some elbow grease to horse that handrail back in line (at least close...), and she's as good as new!
It happened last week on the 18th. As usual the "Johnny-on-the-spot" news reporters each have a different take on what happened and get the details wrong. I like this one. Two Conductors? Here is a good comment posted after an article at another source.
After karate practice last night, we went west with great evening sunlight looking for trains. It wasn't long until we found one, chased west for the westbound, into-the-sunset shot. Here's a rolling meet in between Lonetree and Des Lacs, ND. The heat distortion was pretty bad, but I like the glint. "Big Jack" was on deck for this tele-smash:
I love shooting photos in the golden light just before sunset. Kodachrome loved warm colors and would always provide outstanding results.
I did a search for the wreck of Union Pacific 4838 and wasn't able to find anything but I did find another wreck in June 2012 near Goodwell, Ok. The wreck was caused by the engineer because of poor eyesight, several were killed. This is the worst wreck I have ever seen. Joe
Taken 10-10-1976 at Galesburg, IL is Amtrak's San Francisco Zephyr, headed by SDP40F 587. On 08-27-1977 this unit was heavily damaged in a wreck of the westbound San Francisco Zephyr at LaGrange, IL when it ran upon a BN freight that had derailed. It wasn't repaired and was traded to EMD for a new F40.
Also taken the same day at Galesburg over at the Santa Fe was GP-20 3131. Love that one piece windshield.
I can no longer recall exactly where I took this, but I think it was Far Hills, NJ. In any case, it's 07/22/1976 and we're on the former Lackawanna Gladstone Branch headed to Hoboken. Those are Lackawanna mu cars dating from 1929 or 1930 which ran by the hundreds at the time. Upon installation of a modernized power system, they were retired in August 1984.
