Well, I've got good news and bad news. The Good news: GATS is coming to Denver, Co soon, and my railroad club is going. So, I'll have the chance to get some photos of a few more of my unit trains!! Coal and grain in particular!! The Bad news: I gotta wait another week and a half!! Show isn't until Feb 21/22. Can provide other details for anyone who is interested, and/or close enough to maybe attend.
Keith: The really bad news: my club should be going (Pikes Peak NGineers) and I'm stuck "Over There!"
I'm new to this site, but I also like to run an occasional unit train. I have two unit coal trains, one is an 18 car Milwaukee Electric Coal consist, which usually sports 3 BN SD-40's on point. My other is a mix of BN coal hoppers, about twenty I believe. I also run unit grain, and reefer trains. While the cars are not all the same roadname and color, it's still impressive to see 30 car grain trains run behind a three unit lashup.
OK call me a dumb guy, but what exactly is a "unit train"? I have a reefer train, a passenger train, a mixed freight train, and a tank train, but I don't have a unit train yet. Help?
Robert- A unit train is one made up of all one type of rolling stock. Your reefer train and tank train are indeed "unit trains." Boxcab E50
Keith- Any chance you can take lots of photos? Post them up so Eagle2, and the rest of us can "be there" as well? Boxcab E50
You bet!!!! Last monster train I ran, at BMRC show 3 years ago, was 125 cars, and 9 Atlas SD60/60M locomotives. With a 1" grade and 20" radius curves!! Made lap and a half only, before problems started!!! But, a full lap, trouble free, made it an "official" run!! Half way there Saturday morning, I realized I left camera at home, so no photos of THAT attempt.
I have some shots, (not very good) of Denver Road Doug's 60+ coal unit train with 3 SD70MACs from the Plano show...
Thanks for posting those, Hemi!!! I wondered if they turned out or not. The second one with the kid would have been a great one if it had worked out. (I love trains too, little buddy)
