What is your favorite paint scheme? Chances are I will never purchase either a GP7 or GP9 for my modeling is more modern. But.................. If I do buy one, I will be quick to strip and repaint/decal the loco into the above paint scheme. Awesome! What is your favorite paint scheme! Photos required! Hobo Tim
Tim, Are you sure about never buying a GP7 since you model more modern? I see a scratch building projects with these two! Rob
Tim, I think there are more rebuilt GP7's and GP9's still active on the rails today than there are GP35's. You should have at least one to use as a switcher for all those grain elevators of yours. ;-) Randy
Yeah Tim, just add a set of ditch lights and call it modern! That BNSF unit seems to be coupled to a slug, but I don't see a fuel tank. I wonder if the fuel is in the slug? or if it is a yard switchers and just has a very small tank... My GP7s will be Erie, but here are more cool ones: http://usloki.tripod.com/EMDGP7.htm
i hope the power that be at MTL are watching because there will be not only and increase in demand for these engines, but also a demand for parts. they are very reluctant to offer up anything spare and/or set a ridiculous price for some parts. i would hope the get in sync with modelers wishes -- i can't help but think it will increase purchases even more. thanks to AZL and MTL we are going to have SOOOOOME fun! dave f.
David, I am with you. We need to shop down those high noses so that they look half modern. Also, I know what you mean about parts. I would get more engines because I have parts to convert them, but I am sure Joe will come through. He always does.
Hi Tim, you may need a GP7 or 9 even in the modern era, to run a spur or a shortline for example. Myself I'm also in the modern era but I will probably purchase a sample for a spur. BTW the above paintscheme is very funny! Dom
We're not quite there yet. AZL announced a GP7 and MTL announced a GP9. They will probably both be released sometime in first quarter 2007 and guesstimate on the cost is MSRP between $130 and $225. No official announcements for cost or release dates yet, but we have seen prototypes. Randy
Hi Ralba, Welcome to Trainboard! I have been waiting for the G7's and 9's too. They will be out from 2 manufacturers withing 6 months, maybe even much sooner. I think the AZL offering will be first, and the MTL offering second. AZL plans all kinds of prototype specific details, just like they did with their SD70/75, so for prototype conformance and appearance that will probably be the best choice. Now for affordability and kitbash fodder, maybe the MTL offering will be the choice to make. I will have several from both manufacturers, as I like to make my own comparisons, and do some kitbashing into custom locos.
That Time Is Drawing Near! Soon, the world will be diving into GP7/9's in Z scale. This message thread was started some time ago, but I thought I'd bring it up since the time is drawing near for the GP7/9's to be released! What are you hoping for in the range of color schemes, and/or, do you plan on painting one in your own favorite paint scheme? What might that paint scheme be? Look forward in reading all comments/replies! Post photos! Fantasy paint schemes welcomed too! Hobo Tim
I, of course am hoping for NP! I can do UP, BN, and few others, but I picked my favorite! Whoever does an NP will sell about 10 or so to me, as I will snap them up for my lifetime supply!
whatever comes out (unless it's Rio Grande -- yeah, like that's going to happen) will get stripped and painted ... Rio Grande!!! i keep looking for an announcement. even MTLs website just says "2007", while their other announced projects have specific months attached. i found it rather discouraging, that if the MTL GP9s are anywhere close to release why wouldn't they put a month in '07 to promote them? wasn't AZL going to be first anyway? let's just get 'em going!!! dave f.
