I got my order today for the Faller 282741 Engineering Works kit. This is a new for 2006 kit, and different than any of the other factory kits seen in Z so far. I had heard others say that they thought it was an N Scale kit, reworked for Z, but I decided to order one anyways, because I have seen pictures of similar structures in the pacific northwest. I have not started construction on it, but I did go through the box, and there are almost 400 parts. Although the bricks are a bit larger than those on the Miller Engineering brass kits, they still look good, and when I examined the walls, their tiny size could only be used in a Z Scale structure, not an N Scale one. According to the layout plan, the total footprint is about 9.5" x 3.5" if you lay out the 2 buildings according to plan. Individually you are looking at a 5" x 2" building and a 3.5" x 3.5" building. Different from other structure kits I have seen is that the clear window pieces have had their frames and panes painted black to further add to the detailed appearance. Another item included is a pre-punched black interior cardstock sheet, with printed window treatments, so you can light up the factory and not have the walls glow. Lots and lots of detail parts make it a real nice looking kit, and I can't wait to find the time to put mine together. -Robert
That looks like a nice kit. In Z that amounts to a good foot print. Faller seems to have some nice stuff that could be easily used on both Euro and NA layouts. When the constrcution starts remember.....we need photos! :teeth:
I have already built the passenger station from the series and I am now working on the goods shed. These are definitely NOT N scale sized to Z. They are true Z! Of course, all sets including the loco shed are based on the same basic kit, but the color and details are different. The goods shed actually comes with Z scale fork lifts. Too cool! The kits are easy to build. There are lots of parts, but they go together very nicely. The station actually includes North American signage as well as names of towns for multiple countries. These are definitely a recommended buy. Rob
That station would pass in the U.S. Robert (Ray): see that crane car? We need to US the frame. I have one of those. See ya Sunday
Nice job on the factory Henrik! It would take me a few weeks to do a kit with that many parts! I can whip out a new car a day on my laser, but when it comes to putting together anyone elses kits, it takes me forever.
I have one of the cranes too Henrik, and I need to come up with a different frame for it too. That's 3 of us now, so I will look for photos and drawings to modify it.
Do these Faller kits really fit in an American setting? I always consider these kits as typically German, and therefore do not buy them. Do you have prototype pictures of buildings like these?
There are similar structures all over the US. I have pictures in my NP books of factories along the line that look a lot like the Kibri factories. There is a bit of modifications needed to Americanize them, but it's better to have something to work with rather than nothing.
