I needed a transition car to go between the knuckle couplers on an AZL locomotive and a set of Marklin passenger cars. I built an observation car to fill the need. This is resin-printed at .05 layer height using water washable Space Gray from Elegoo. The original Marklin cars sported an aluminumish roof that I just couldn't match. So I ended up painting them all with copper roofs. Here's the link on Thingiverse. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6974450 . I'll try to add some daylight photos of the finished product soon.
My starter set with Z gauge was the King Ludwig II, which is a steam engine, two passenger cars and a baggage car. I don't think the KL2 steam engine can be turned into DCC, so I got an AZL diesel to pull the passenger cars. That required either swapping out the couplers on the AZL or building a transition car. Swapping the couplers was too easy, so I opted for building my own transition car. The observation car follows the body style of the KL2 passenger cars with an original design observation roof. I got a very good paint match with Valejo very dark green for the body, but couldn't get close to the silver roof of the other cars. So I decided to paint them all copper, which I like a lot better. I haven't come up with a theme for this layout yet. I may continue with the post apocalyptic theme I did on my T layout. Since the time period is post Civil War II, any piece of railroad stock that could be found would be run so that allowed me to run different eras with stock from different lines...anything they could get their hands on. That also means that failed 3D prints or even support structures can be put to use. The T gauge line was the P&M, which eventually evolved into The Pizmo Line. Here's the T gauge Pizmo https://imgur.com/9iRceJd . I know...a lot more info than you asked for, but I'm sitting here waiting for glue to dry....
That's awesome. I've had similar ideas of post-apocalyptic pieces as I modify some of my "prototypical" models into fantasy models. It would be cool to have a train straight out of Mad Max or similar. -Mike
