The ever expanding Yellowhead Railway has taken delivery of its first Boxcar. Caught just leaving the paintshop is boxcar number 200000. Decals were done on my laser Jet on Testers clear decal paper.
Well I printed enough decals to do three dozen cars, and I have two other cars that I just finshed painting, so it would be pretty easy to take some shots as I put the next one together
Dan: What color are the decals? All black? They look very nice. I am encouraged as I am getting into making my own decals, also. Thanks.
Now you have me wondering- How hard is it to make decals in a lighter color? Such as a yellow? Boxcab E50
I'll let you know my opinion on home inkjet and Laser jet decals. First when using a clear decal film stay with the Dark colors, Black, Blue, Red. Any attempt to go with lighter greens or yellows will not work. They are too transluscent to be any good. If you want a colored decal it is best to design a decal that can be printed on white decal paper. This of couse limits you to Logos such as my YHR. Because of these limitations, I decided to use gray and Yellow as colors in my paint scheme. Both of these colors allow black text to show well. So the boxcar decals are done on clear paper using my laser jet black printer. Tabasco train The gaps don't present a problem, and are only noticable when doing macro photography. This is a new area and I haven't got around to fine tuning everything. I have in the past used a drop of casting resin to fill in these gaps. You can then sand and paint them to blend in completely with the rail Here is another picture showing my locomotive scheme, and an express reefer. Because the reefer is a very light gray the yellow band turned out alright. If you used this over a darker color the yellow would practically disappear. Anyway this is a good example of how a color scheme was designed to enable me to make the most out of what I can do with my color inkjet home made decals. [ 04. Dan, I have always enjoyed your work, and both the express and "standard" boxcars look fantastic. The Yellowhead has a very good looking paint scheme; it is very consistent with the "contemporary" paint schemes of the CNR and CPR. Keep up the pictures; they are inspiring!
I was experimenting with the Testors decal paper over the weekend with mixed results. I hit them with dull coat before work so i won't know what the final result is until I get home from work tonight. They are VERY thick and did not want to set down over ribs and fine details, even with Walthers solveset. What are you using on yours?
Darn! Well, guess I'll go back to Paint Shop, and play with some variations. I was going to do a color scheme similar to the Rock Island red/yellow of the late 1960's. Boxcab E50
