Does anyone know if the 2-8-8-4 Yellowstones borrowed from the DM&IR had the Elesco or the Worthington feedwater heater? Were the units of the M3 or M4 class?
Did you check that Prospector issue a year or so ago? I have it, whether or not I can find it is another issue entirely.
This is probably a stupis question but, what's the difference? I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I really don't know. Eric
One of our steam experts, LEW, had a thread related to this sometime back. Check here for some good information. I don't know the exact differences, though. Here is some more information, too. The Elsco is the indirect type feedwater heater and the Worthington is the direct type. The Worthington direct type was an improvement to the indirect feedwater types. It is explained in the link above this paragraph.
Tony, I am not that familiar with the DM&IR Yellowstones, but from photos, it's obvious what kind of feedwater heaters they had. The thing is, most roads changed them during the life of an engine, so some that were "born" with Elescos may have been converted to Worthingtons some time in their lives. Here's a link to Wes Barris' Yellowstone page: http://www.steamlocomotive.com/yellowstone/ In looking at his photos, to me it would appear that 223, 225, 227 and 234 were all equipt with Elesco, which is the horizontal "tube" across the top of the smokebox. Interestingly, 221 (M3) and 232(M4) appear to have Worthington, which is shaped like a box at the very front of the smokebox. Wes's site also defines which ones were M3 and M4. Some time back I posted photos of these different appliances. If you want, I'll try to find them and repost them. :teeth:
Yes! I found a page on the New York Central and they had all different types of heaters (not just Elesco or Worthington) on all different types of engines. NYC was always experimenting. In a discussion like this, I wonder what became of the companies that made those feedwater heater appliances? I would hope that they adapted and survived to make something else after the heaters were no longer needed.
Interesting, Yellowstones are Cab Forwards running the other way! :teeth: Hmm, seems like there are two sequences of numbers, and within the sequence the type of feed water heater is specified. So, if I can just find out what numbers were borrowed by the DRGW....
