I have been into model trains for a while, but took a break from it for quite a few years till I could find room for a layout, I was HO but now running N scale because of room constraints. I have a question about a yard. Does everybody put roadbed down in their yards? cork or foam? I have a simple ladder design, I can move trains around, build and store them. I have kato unitrack for my mainline, but have atlas code 80 for my yard, couldn't pass up a roughly 450 piece used N track package for $100. So do I put roadbed down or just attach the track directly to the foam w/nails or glue? still new to yards and scenary, just always had a simple 4x8 HO layout growing up. couldn't afford all the fancy scenary stuff. Now I can. Thanks for any help or threads to look at.

They sell cork in sheets in various thicknesses. That is what I have seen used.

I have been going back and forth on the same question. I think I am leaning towrd just spiking the track into the homasote. Kinda different with foam I guess. I know cork has some sound deadening but for yard operations the trains won't be moving that fast and won't be that loud anyway. So, why spend the money on cork?

This is what I did on my layout. It lowers the track just enough, that is if you get something thinner than the mainline roadbed.
