The theory of the Mother-Slug combo is that below 25 MPH the electrical output of the Mother is more that it's own traction motors can utilize. The Slug uses this excess power on its traction motors. Originally, the slugs were fueled and the fuel was transferred to the Mother as necessary; however, the fuel system frequently failed and in the early 1990's the fuel transfer systems were removed and only the Mother gets fuel.
