Guys, I was hoping to start on my X181 project sometime soon.. but the gnrhs says expect up to FIVE weeks for reference sheets to show up!

Anyone have the plans for this caboose that they'd be willing to scan/xerox for me? :)

Is this the 40' boxcar-turned caboose? Didn't John Moore or Marty Coil make one?

Marty did....I made it in a true kit-bash fashion. The roof is from a 40' boxcar, the ends and cupola from a Bachman caboose and the under frame is a 40' boxcar frame with the ends cut off and Atlas caboose ends added. EXCELLENT picture in the Fourways West book GN Equipment in color #3 Cabooses and MOW. Have actually built 2. As for the Measurements....I guessed from the photo. the sides are from Evergreen sheet plastic. Tichy-Trains have come out with some baggae door that can be modified to fit and look right . Had to build my own. One problem area is you must trin underframe around baggage door. The door will go lower than the sides that hold the weight,...Hope this helps in the building. The plans will allow you to make it more exact than mine......

one more thing...you WILL NEED a Gold Medal -Details for a Model Power Caboose. GN had the ladders in the left. The Endrals and ladders from Gold Medal can go either way. MT ladders can only be used on the right. Important for the GN because they had a platform roofwalk.....

    Thanks, Marty!
After scratchbashing 2 X1-X30 series hacks, I think I am done for a while.

Yep, I saw marty's work, very nice :) But I'd still like the plans if I can get 'em.

Also, the X181 used the underframe from a 50' box, not a 40'. Sorry marty :teeth:

Those pics look make it look longer than 50', just the body of the cab appears longer than that...

I know, I was thinking the same thing. But, according to the 1973 BN Annual and the GN Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equip, it's on a 50' box chassis.
