I just got some photo etched chain link security fencing for my layout. Anyone have any tips on attaching it or painting. I have some fine brass wire I thought I could use to make fence posts, but I'm not sure about painting them and how to attach them to the fencing. The fence is stainless. Any info would be helpful. Thanks Trey
In N -scale I used dress maker needles for fence posts, but I think in Z ordinary straight pins would work, for intermediate post and the dressmaker needles which are longer and heavier for end posts then I use ACC Gell and put a drop on needle at top and middle of fence height on the needles and then hold the etching against the pins with another pin to hold it in place while ACC sets up. Using the gel gives you time to place the fence sections and it holds it in place while setting up. painting I did before I put the fence up the needles I used blacken it on them as they do not hold paint very well, but raw they will do for galvanized pipe, and and ACC will not bond to metal pin through the paint. N-gineering has stainless tubing in very several small diameters that could also be used for a top rail as well as fence posts. But I have not used it for this sort of thing, I use the tubing for lamp posts etc.
For posts use phosphor bronze wires, they're more rigid. Painting is near impossible without clogging. Chemical "blackening" is the easiest to turn the fence to an aged industrial look.
I would spray a coat of Dull Cote on the finished piece and then if you wanted it weathered a bit use powders. The Dull Cote gives the powders something to grab ahold of and dull is more realistic than shiny.
I picked up some straight pins form dolloar store and the look like the perfect size. I will post a few pics once I get them all glued. Great solution, thanks all. Trey
Trey, Forget the straight pins, you don't need them. Stainless fencing is the easiest to work with. To weather it just give it a good india ink wash, let that dry then give a good rust wash. Let it dry, then glue it down with crazy glue. Here it is on my layout out: http://www.trainboard.com/railimage...ber_Co_Fenced_In_LIRR_Z_Scale_10_Oct_11_1.JPG John
Fence looks great, but would like to see more of the layout on which it sits, your picture is an interesting tease.
This is the layout. It is 27" x26". It is my first layout attempt. It was to test ideas and learn. Overall, I am pleased. Landscaping, much like a beard, can cover a multitude of sins. Thanks for the input.
