Has anyone out there made a working End of train device, that little thing that replaced our cabosse? I found a company called Western Rail that makes one, has anyone tried that? Who eles makes a working EOT, I'm looking for one that can be put in a 48ft container and is relitivly easy to do. Kevin
Kevin, try http://www.richmondcontrols.com/ They have an assortment of lighting effects, including FRED's. Gary. ------------------ Gary A. Rose The Unofficial TC&W page TrainBoard Moderator and Member No.377 N to the Nth degree!
hmm, I like the EZ25 because it says it is easy to instal and uses a batery, but how small it the FRED? will it look right on a N scale train? Kevin
Try Aztez web site. They have an assortment of FRED installed rolling stock. I have the 2-bay centerflow hopper NYC and it looks well. http://www.aztectrains.com/ ...Eddie ------------------ Eddie Delozier PRR N-scale www.deloziers.com eddelozier@yahoo.com
Go with Richmond! I met the owner at a show in Denver, and he's a great guy, very helpful. Also, installation of their stuff is dead-bang easy. I've got one of his kits for headlights and a strobe installed in a Kato SD 40-2, and the hardest part was drilling the holes! ------------------ Jenks - the REAL Big Blue

Kevin

I'm not sure of what is supplied with the Richmond kits, but the smallest standard LED I know of is a 2mm diameter which is too big, really. There are some that have a side mounted nodule and you have some leeway with filing down the body of the LED to approximate the FRED case. Then all you'll need to do is find a method of running the legs of the LED into the car, etc., that is to your liking. If you are worried about the size of any scratchbuilt FRED, maybe having the light inside a boxcar or container and running a fibre-optic line out to the FRED could be a solution? Try Eddie's suggestion of looking at Aztec's site. I couldn't recall the manufacturer (Aztec) when I made my original reply. Gary.
Even though it's always "today" on the AOW, I can't get away from having Cabeese. I've thought about going to "FREDS" but always buy another Caboose. With that in mind, what is more cost effective, Caboose or EOT? In real life we know the answer to this, EOT. But are these units in N-Scale more or less expensive than the "Old Trusty Crusty Crummy"? The most I've payed for a Caboose is about $15.00 US with Micro-Trains Couplers installed, how much is the EOT unit? I figure I'll need one car equipted for every type of train I run (about eight, including Passenger trains with express cars on the rear) and the three or four Cabeese we currently have, more than cover the Job. No, we do not put Cabeese on Passenger Trains on the AOW. ------------------ Brent Tidaback, Member #234 BNSF Railfan-to-the Max and a N-Scaler to boot! "Ship it on the Route of The Roadrunners!" For all my genral frieght trains and Local's I put cabosses on them, heck around here BNSF still puts cabosses on the locals, its quite grovy! I USED ONE OF CIRUITRONS FREDS FOR ONE OF MY COAL HOPPERS. IT USES BATTERY POWER AND WORKS GREAT. DAN http://gotrains.homestead.com/MYRAILMODEL.html
A FRED is very easy to make, and only uses a few components. Sept/Oct 2000 N Scale magazine has an article with the details. I'll go with Gats about using fibre-optic to keep the lens to scale size. ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery
Easy kits are fine BUT I'M NOT A WIZARD WITH A SOLDERING IRON. Thanks Man! I knew someone would have the answer! Looks like the AOW/BNSF Cabeese Fleet is going to get some little brothers! Just like the real world, the EOT is more cost effective than the Caboose, unless batteries eat me alive! ------------------ Brent Tidaback, Member #234 BNSF Railfan-to-the Max and a N-Scaler to boot!
