This was a test case for a new car I needed to have. I had a problem with the coupler box, so I had to cut away material for them, but this setup leaves the sides with a low profile like the prototype. The height is a bit low:

I fixed the height for this car, so it now measures a scale 16' from the top of the rails. I salvaged the first underframe, and just peeled off the sides from the model above.

I need to perfect my decal application method for this car, so I will build several more. I used the laser to cut some foam rubber for the inside shape of the woodchip load, trimmed a profile with scissors, brushed on Matte Medium, then dipped in WS Yellow Grass ground foam:

Am I the only one that thinks it odd to see wood chip cars make out of wood chips? LOL!

    Robert, they look great!

Nice work, the structural reinforcement grid is just amazing
and using some 3M 467MP Adhesive under the plywood is such a great idea.

Were do you purchase your 3M 467MP Adhesive from?

And I surely like to have your plywood supplier too.
I get mine from a friend who is working at Bombardier, he's in the furniture department for the Regional jet but he can only bring me an 8x10 scrap sheet once per 3 months.

    Thanks

I got the transfer adhesive tape off ebay. There is a guy who sells it for $1.89 a square foot. It's 12" wide, and he also sells full rolls for $230. I discovered I can't model without the stuff. :shade:

Credit John Barotlotto for suggesting it.

    Thanks, I found him.

What about your plywood sheet? Were do you get those?
Local suppliers? Like I said I can only get a small 8"x10" sheet occasionally. Is it called veneer or something else?
1/32 and 1/64 think and lower than that, are hard to find. People at lumber yards are looking at me like I'm from mars or something, when I ask for this type of plywood.

In any case if I’m asking too much questions please say so.

    Thanks

    Ben

    Ben,
this kind of wood is sold at R/C aircraft suppiers. you might also find it at a Michaels or MJDesigns (not always though). "Midwest" is the brand name which sells most of this thin plywood. if nothing else, call Mikes Hobby Shop in Carrollton/Farmers Branch, Texas. He can sell it, ship it, or refer you (972) 242-4930. it's out there, you just have to look in the right places.

Hi Ben, I buy my wood from Balsa USA and National Balsa. Both sell the same materials. It is called Finnish Birch Plywood, and I buy the 12" x 48" sheets of 1/32" and 1/64" from them. It is designed to skin model aircraft, but this is the most economical source I have found.

When I first started, I contacted many model railroad manufacturers as to where I could find materials and what was the best to use, but they all gave me one form or another of "Ancient Chinese Secret", and refuesed to tell, so I vow to tell all secrets I have learned, if only to get even!

I hate secrets! :zip: How is a guy supposed to get a fair start, and just think of all the great ideas that go to waste because other manufacturers won't share their sources and knowledge?

    I second the Tell-All-Secrets thingy!

I agree. Sorry no good for nothing S. O. B.'s think they are the ¤¤¤¤zky! The only ones who know! So full of it! I have had the same problem in many different areas! I'll tell anyone all of my secrets of how I do the things I do! Jeffrey White was amazed at where I learned my mold making/cast resin techniques when I showed him Sunday! If I know, I'll tell!
