Do you have any wierdest thing you ever saw on the RR? Mine is a story from local railfan Which I named "Roof Rider"

A guy was travelling on a train, surprisingly, he sat on the roof of passenger car instead of sitting inside like everyone else. Finally a bridge clipped his head off. :eek:mg:

Kids, NEVER try this on your local railroad.

I've seen lots of trash along the roadbed, but that is extreme! I imagine that it also occurred in the US during the Depression when many out-of-work people were hopping freight trains.

I once saw an auto rack draped in wires with a utility pole, one end hooked on top and the other dragging along in the ballast.

On Northern Pacific RY branch where I grew up, we saw a lot of log cars. Empties would many times be dragging their steel banding along. Look out! It did prune a lot of brush!

Self propelled UP Boom Derreck. I dont know maybe they all are, I just assumed they were pushed or towed by a locomotive. Needless to say when the gates come down on the main, and your excited, thinking you'll catch a fast double stacker, and then a a Boom Crane with CNW caboose in tow comes flying by at 30-40 mph. Quite the surprise.

That reminds me of a big rubber tired front end loader with high railer guide wheels. It did not set off the crossing gates or lights and about ran me over. Fortunately I have the habit of looking to see if anything is coming anyway and was able to stop.

I was working right next to the Milw/UP auto unloading facility at Kent (West Siding), Washington. Had ordered a brand new Ford 4x4. Saw it come in. And it had been bricked!

I have a picture somewhere from last spring. While railfaning the C&I just west of Rochelle on Grist Mill Rd. We found a perfect deer skeleton hanging from the cross bucks. Considering the size of the deer and the hieght of the cross bucks, I figured the deer had been struck by the train and flung.

    More funny than wierd...
I was switch foreman on a day job, East Yard Eola some years back.
had a helper and a student. I was giving a demonstration to the student
about hand signals. I had to set a gon-load of ties over to the track that the rest of the work train was on. Using hand signals, I gave the hogger a wind-up and a kick signal. I pulled the pin, let him build up some "oooomphh" and gave him the "washout". That gon shot down the
proper track and made a hard joint on the standing train, but in doing so
launched a tie which sailed about 20 ' before landing between the tracks. We all got a good laugh, but fortunately didn't break anything or
    hurt anybody.

Getting gas on the then BN main south of Billing when the daily manifest went south. It was doing 40 -50 mph with a long string on mt tables. On the 10 car or so was a hobo surfing a 89 flat. His forward stance was to counter the motion but it looked just like he was surfing a big wave.

10-12 years ago I saw a guy desparately hanging on to the air tank and rigging of a covered hopper right above the coupler pocket at about 50 mph. What was pathetic was that the next car back was an empty 50' box with an open door. I figure the poor guy had to wait about 3 hours until at least Mobile before the train stopped and he could upgrade his accomodations....

Just this summer while driving along the BNSF Transcon, I spotted a freight train with several birds on the roof of a boxcar- the freight was doing about 40-50 MPH.
