Didn't Alan Curtis work on a BN composite boxcar before he sold the molds to N Scale Kits? I'm not sure if this is the same car or not.
I'm just going to use the walthers 70 footer and say the missing 12 feet is due to the bad economy :tb-embarrassed:
Mark, Fine N Scale makes a resin set, FNR-2210, that has multiple reefers. One of them could serve as an ok stand-in: http://www.finenscale.com/intermodal.html I used one in an older ARMN conversion: It's a little bit undersized for what you want, but probably good enough. Cheers, Gary
lets do a little figuring we know how wide the boxcar is? 10' i know a most road trainers are 96'' or 102'' wide so figuring the a/c unit is the same size as a road unit? it will work
I bashed one of those out of a Walthers Cryogenic Reefer. I am probably going to sell this car as it is a few years too new for the time line of my layout.
OK Sillystring.....PICTURES and DETAILS of how you did it. Of course I just traded away my 5 cryos to save money for the BLMA Trinity's
FANTASTIC bash!! The detail on your end steps and a/c unit pull through nicely, great paintwork for sure. Sadly I have no use for anything post-1970, but darn I wish I could justify pulling that with a 2-6-0! I'd get locked up, I am sure.... (the rivet-counters are watching! LOL)
Ok. I did that bash two years or so ago so I am working from memory as to how I did it. The first thing that has to be done is to remove every-other seam from the sides if the car shell with a new chisel xacto blade. The car floor has to be lowered. The end needs trimmed off and then flat ends made for the shell. The roof was the hardest part in trying to get the right curvature with sheet styrene. The refrigeration unit is just a rounded piece of styrene. The platform is made from Plastruct pieces and some leftover Gold Medal Models tank car platforms. The fuel tank is round styrene filled with CA glue and then turned (ends rounded) on a cordless drill. The skirt cutouts by where the trucks are need to be done and then the jack plates were made from styrene. I used a set of couplerless Micro-Trains trucks with low profile wheelsets. Lastly paint and the Micro-Scale decal sheet.
