The Sunset Limted (#1) passed by this morning, and I saw what looked like white stripes of paint or tape below the windows on a few cars. The stripes appeared to be 4-5" wide and 12-15" long, lying horizontally, centered just beneath each of the windows.

The stripes were only on the crew dorm and two of the coaches. The two sleepers, diner, lounge, and third coach had no stripes. Does anyone know what these white stripes might signify?

Just a guess, but sounds like scotchlite reflective tape. It's very common on trailers and freight cars, and it sounds like it may be appearing on passenger cars now too. Just a guess.

That's possible. But if that's the case, I would have thought the stripes would be nearer the ground where they would reflect from auto headlights, not up 12-15' above the ground.

Additional info ... #2 just passed eastbound (>17 hours late!!!) and the crew dorm and one coach had reddish-orange stripes, similar to the TrainBoard banner color. However, the other two coaches had white stripes, and the sleepers, diner, and lounge had no stripes.
