    Hunter,
Super great pics! You win the prize!

As far as car colors, I have had most and can tell you that a dark color car definately gets hotter than a light color car. It has to do with the fact that lighter colors reflect more light (and heat) and darker colors are less reflective, hence they hold in the heat. This is a very basic principle that you can easily test for yourself if you do not believe it.
They have started to paint the rooftops of our school buses white too. It is not a "new" idea, just something that has recently gotten more attention.

    I noticed a porta-potty today at a construction site.
It was all green with a white roof! Wouldn't you want to keep that thing cool inside????????
    LOL!

    Hi folks,

I read on Dean Heacock's CSX Photo Archives that he is not planning on including the white roof CSX units as a unique paint scheme, because he has heard from sources that this is applied not using paint, but with some type of white tarp, perhaps like shrink wrap? Has anyone heard anything about this? I'd like to find out if this is true - it would make sense as an easy way to apply the white roof without having to send the unit through a paint shop.

I caught a C30-7, SD40-2, and an SD50 with white roofs at Cumberland - I'll try to post them soon, once I get them scanned...

    Dave,
I knew Dean wasn't planning a new paint scheme designation for the white roof units, but did not know about the application of the white in other than paint form. True, it could be a white plastic membrane item, kind of like they apply to flat roof buildings or mobile homes. I do not know enough about it and have not been close enough to a white roof unit to see...

    Guys,
I hate to say it but I believe it to be paint on some loco's and the tarp covering on others... I was up close and personal with an SD-50 at Sand Patch with the engineer and the roof was in fact white. It wasn't a tarp or anything... It was setting on the helper pocket siding and the engineer was on the ground and I got talking to the man and asked about the roof and other things, so I got a tour of the cab!!!! And The white on the roof of this SD-50 was in fact paint!!! Their was drips and overspray!!!!!! The number one clue that it was paint!!!! :D

It's paint. I just talked to my friend who is a CSX engineer. He said he just took one of these re-paints out the other day. He said he saw an ex Conrail GP-38 still in the blue, gold numbers and a white roof in the Buffalo yard.

    Herman,
I seen the paint over spray and the drippings from it on the nose and around the bug boards and top lights and thought. Thats not a membraine of anytype! Its paint.... And then remembered about the board here and posted it! I guess they have one sloppy painter in the Cumberland shops... If thats where it was painted.....

Another "White Roof" data point - 7800 has a white roof. It was on the point yesterday, heading west for New Orleans.
