which decoder should I use?

I am trying to find which drop in decoder to use on an Athearn SD70m.
Can any one give me a hint?

I believe someone mentioned the the decoder for the Kato SD40 or was it SD40-2 would fit

 

The easiest one to drop in is actually the new DN163K1C... The DN163K1B would work too but you have to slightly shave down the LED's to fit by the light channels where with the K1C using the surface mount LED's there is no need for this. Athearn also has a guide on their website for installing the Digitrax decoder into these engines. I've done one myself and it went very easy. A little more work then a Kato but still no machining or anything.

 

I've heard Lenz is the best decoder.

 

I would use a drop-in decoder if one is available for that loco.
