I was driving to the hardware store last sunday when I spotted 9 ac4400's doing about 60 mph. All but one were UP, and one was SP. Even my wife was impressed. Of course I didn't have my video camera with me to record this all engine, no train car, train. DOH! and my wife didn't have her still camera with her either. Double DOH! (tried to post this earlier this week but somehow my post got eaten by the web)
My "Rails to the Twin Ports" video by Pentrex shows a train with 7 or 8, maybe 9 high horse power road locomotives cruising along at a good clip, exept they are pulling a train.
Saw a yard move of 13 locos, 12 GE types (Dash 8C/CW's) and a lone SD60, in CNW and Borg, cruising through Nampa Yard outside of Boise, back in '95. Not doing 60 though! I did have a camera... hehe.
This was posted on one of the previous versions of the Atlas forum (author unknown). What are the chances they moved a whole row at once?
Hooch, I swear I've seen that picture before. I believe that's Northown Yard in Fridley, Minnesota. There are a few more pictures like that also. I think I saw them on BNSFPIX.COM possibly. Can't remember but thanks for posting - pretty awesome display of power. I'm sure they could move the whole row by using one loco as the "power" and putting the rest of the locos in "neutral", however I would bet that each loco has it's hand brake set which is probably SOP when leaving a loco unattended. I've watched Engineers set the hand brakes during crew changes/etc.
I've been thinking the same thing all week since I dropped and broke my digital camera! I can't wait to get it back from the repair shop!
I think your right, that is Northtown yard. I have a friend that took a photo of a CNW train back in the late 70's that was all locomotives, all dead in tow. If I remember right it was headed to storage in Iowa.
I had never seen 9 engines moving together like that in my while life. I am still cursing my bad luck. Nice yard shot there. All of this justifys the engines only layout concept.
Going back about 20 years, just before they closed Stampede Pass, I caught a BN power transfer at Easton, WA. If memory serves me correctly, nine units heading east. For either Yakima or Pasco. I will have to find it and post it but I have a shot of 10 SD70MAC's all pulling out of the 38th street yard in Denver. Took it with the old olympus but still an impressive sight. You know with all of the power shortages that BNSF is having I would bet they want a few of those 40-2's back on the rails.
How are the Denver BNSF & UP yards when it comes to Railfans taking photos? When I was in Phoenix a few years back they didn't mind if I went into the yards to get a certain shot as long as I was safe and out of the way.
The Denver UP yard is not too picky, but I don't venture closer than the parking lot under the overpass. Just not enough room elsewhere. The BNSF yard is so very busy, but I only had trouble once, and I was in my truck! Just taking pics from the truck, a BNSF RR bull showed up, and asked us to leave. I forget his reasoning, however.
