anyone know if this car was made outside of the kato set? something like this but in N? http://www-personal.umich.edu/~markusn/models/railroad/amtrak/am33507_1.jpg
That appears to be a kitbash of a Kato or Con-Cor Superliner Lounge car. Other than the brass AT&SF HL Lounge (Hallmark?) the only other true car is the one from the Kato El Capitain set, that I'm aware of.
i think the one i pictured was a HO scale version. gah...is there anyone who would buy that capitan set off of me if i just took out that car? lol
I've been scouring eBay, since a few people have been listing individual El Cap cars but NONE of them have listed the lounges, only the coaches. If you find any...
complete listings show 1 that sold by a guy who broke up the set (even sold the box). the lounge sold for $45 before shipping but the other cars didnt sell. which means if i get the set to try to sell off the rest, i wont have any luck either.
If you really want an acurate pacific parlor car the brass one is the way to go. The Kato would need the letter board modified, windows tinted, painted and decaled. The brass is RTR. It's listed for $100. LookModel makes beautiful cars!
those modifications are simple so that wont be too big of a prob yea im not going to get a look model one lol. though he did have a sale a couple months ago for it at $75....still a little too rich for my blood after shipping is factored in. need kato to make a step down sleeper too.
FYI Not that I want to ruin anyone's fun here. The car pictured in a previous post, is not a former Santa Fe Parlor Car. It was built as part of the new fleet of Amtrak's "Highliners". Seems to me ConCor put out a version of this car in their set of highliners. No interior and the windows will need to be tinted. Is this what you are looking for? If you are looking for the "Pacific Parlor" lounge car from the Kato El Capitan set, you can do what I am doing. I bought an extra El Capitan set and am modifying the lounge for the "Pacific Parlor" using Microscale decals. I am using 4 of the remaining high level coachs and the baggage car for my San Francisco Chief (get the Bachmann "Big Dome" car as well) and am planning to cut down the roof of the baggage-dorm for my earlier single level El Capitan (use 5-6 of the 1950 built Con Cor ATSF coachs). Finding a home for 7 of the Kato El Capitan set makes it worthwhile to break down a set. Not sure what I'll do with the diner and extra coachs, but I guess I'll figure something out. I did see a photo of an earlier "Pacific Parlor" car without the modified smooth number board, so I will probably go that way as I'm lazy. Gerry
ah yes, that one. judging by the sales on ebay. it would be a pain to sell off the rest of the capitan set and just keep the parlour. theres just not enough demand for those individual cars.
The only other AMTK use of hi-levels, at least recently, was on the Heartland Flyer (OKC-Ft. Worth), which had a pair of ex-ATSF coaches sandwiching a Superliner coach/cafe, I think. Unfortunately I think I probably know all of the guys who might be interested in modeling that train, and there aren't too many of them. They were fun to photograph but frustraiting to ride; the modern cars were much more comfortable.
Sold All Most! Not so quick my good friend. I might be interested in those cars. After all they were used on the San Francisco chief, the El Capitan and other Santa Fe name trains. I can't move on them today. If you can hold them for me I will work out a deal with you. Or if you haven't bought them yet...I can... and send you. Hummm. Now I maybe digging myself into a hole here.
If Kato ever gets around to doing "parts" you will likely have a chance at building one from what they offer. So far no sign of such happening... but maybe in the future.
well that only would have been worth it as a well known online dealer was blowing them out yesterday =D. so until i find another deal...
Don't chop that Baggage Dorm car. That was the only car that Look Models does not make. They are like gold to those of us that bought the rest of the train. Or the NGI step down coach kits. Kato is now offering an Amtrak step down car with a baggage car in a two car set.
