SP/SSW Where are they now?

Spent the weekend at Vaughn, NM (from 10pm 07/01 thru 8am 07/04) Never saw a single SP unit (not even a patch job).

Saw one former SP in lease service for HLCX but that was it.

Is there no Bloody Nose left anywhere?

 

I've seen a few in the Roseville CA yard

 

I saw a consist on the Fourth with 3 AC4400's elephant style, two SP's and a UP in the middle. Both SP's were patched, but decent paint on both. No pics though. I was on a quick trip to the HD for some 2-cycle oil and didn't grab my camera.

 

Here are a few SP units that I have seen in Grand Juction, CO over the last 6 months.

 

UP yards, Tacoma, WA. today, had one of the AC4400 sitting there. Looked kinda clean, except for the patches on her.

Hey George, last trace I saw online indicated there are still over 200 unpatched SP units still in active service on the UP. Locally here in the Vegas Valley, they are the preferred locomotive to use, since a lot of the former SD-45's (previously rebuilt by MK to SD-40M standards) are the locomotive of choice for locals jobs. Their AC (air conditioning) units are considered by some of the best out there since they are not that old and really work well, keep the crews very cool in this summer of blast furnace temperatures (112+)

 

SP AC units

There are a lot of former and current SP AC units that still come through the Vegas Valley. I see them a lot on inbound (to the west coast) coal trains.

Headed out this weekend. Our first day off since my post above and boy do I need it!

I see them, both patched and unpatched, around here all the time. The Leesdale Local often has at least one SP unit on it.

Caught only two ex-SP units this weekend.

One AC4400 on an eastbound coal drag @ Duran.

The second was a Tunnelmotor in Vaughn WB late last night ~ 9pm. A real bummer as it was just too dark for even 'nightshot'. Well nightshot would have gotten it but the benefits are negligible when you are trying to document a disappearing breed.

 

I posted this a couple of weeks ago. Found this beauty in Inglside, Tx switching the big plants that line the bay. No strike out, or patches on this baby, YET!!!!

 

SP 203 was in Louisville today (unpatched!!!). I'm going to start taking my camera with me to work so I can catch all this cool stuff.

 

Lets hope they stay that way!! How that brings back memories. WOW, what a beautiful shot!! BTW, I've seen quite a few patchjobs beginning to return to Dolores Yard again; I was told a few of them were coming in via Las Vegas.
