My wife has put the brakes on spending money on the railroad ...I must agree at this point because I am just starting a PhD, and books are costing a lot of money (2 books at 50 dollars each/month adds up!!). Has this stopped me??? NO !! It has made me be more resourseful, which is fun. Instead of buying new autos for scenes, I make casts of those I have and make as many as I need from plaster. I am making casts of buildings too, and working my favorite: scratch building wooden structures. I figure I can claim the plaster for household repairs if she ever questions it ! So folks, remember, when the Chief Financial Officer says "no," it does not mean the trains must stop...the real trains don't...the railroads just get resourceful! John
Thats one "HEAVY WEIGHT" passenger car! You may even want to get equilized trucks for him! HA! Welcome to see your back Watash ole buddy!
Back to basics, John me boy, back to basics... To get some of the larger structures I want, I may have to do some styrene construction for the most modern stuff. I've done some heavy kitbashing & scratchbuilding when I was an HOer, and judging by the Walthers thread in the scale forum, I will be doing some more. BTW, what university are you pursuing your PhD through?
Watash, God forbid that to happen! I'm just thankfull your still around an ok! I was begining to worry till I went to e-mail you one evening and something told me to go to trainboard first and I did and seen what happened and why you weren't around! You weren't home... You think a plaster heavy weight is heavy...try a Big Boy!! Yes, back to basics. I really am having fun digging through my "junk" boxes and making stuff that not only works on the layout, but looks good too!! Watash, I never could get my e-mail to reach you, so the best place to contact you was here. Thanks for all the funnies you sent to me, they really helped! I am a student with the University of Leicester (pronounced Lester), England. How? They have expanded an online Master's program they have had for years to include a PhD. Ain't technology wonderful? I don't have to give up my job, family, house etc. to get the !@%$## degree. Plus it can be done in about the half the time as an American university...so why not? my American advisors also feel that taking the dissertation topic out of the country is a good idea as it is somewhat controversial at the moment (Anasazi violence, including supposed cannibalism). Anyway...its good to be back! John
John, You are a real "freelanced freelancer"! HA! go from one freelanced idea to the next...... Keep up the good work! Its nice to know that the freelancers are out their and all... I'm just "Proto-typically Freelanced" thats all..
Sounds like time for a new wife...
quote:
Originally posted by JCater: My wife has put the brakes on spending money on the railroad ...the railroads just get resourceful! John

You have a fascinating subject for your dissertation John. I am in the process of reading a novel called "Thunderhead" by Douglass Preston & Lincoln Child which covers some of what your research must be finding. Back to railroading. Here in Canada the worth of our dollar and the losing stockmarkets are the main reason I look for cheap ways to do everything.
There is another reason for scratchuilding too, to make stuff you can't buy anywhere. On this thought, has anyone here etched brass car sides? I'm a avid (notice how that rhymes with rabid?) SP&S modeller and some of the cars I need have almost certainly never been made even in brass! I want to get a hold of the plans (or make my own) and etch my won sides for passenger cars. What I'm wondering is where can I find the info on how to do it. Help on this would be much appreciated.
While not answering your question as far as plans for the cars you want, once you have the plans you can have the sides made (in plastic) by Laser Horizons. I have bought NYC cars from them, and they noted they could make any car if provided the plans. The sides fit the Eastern Car Works core kit. Email @ LaserHriz@aol.com Cost should be about $18 per car. Good luck finding the plans. Gary
Ok, great, thanks!! I'll drop them an email and see if I can get this rolling. I need to either find a copy of the Pullman Standard Library, Volume 3 or else annoy the NRHS chapter in portland to let me come down and take my own measurements. The car I want was one of only two built for the SP&S and as luck would have it, one is in Portland being restored. Thanks again for the info.
