Well I've been a good boy lately and started getting some projects finished!

Firstly the Class 86 electrics, IvanFs design on Shapeways, that fits on the Marklin BR120 chassis. I have four of these 5000 HP Bo-Bos that plied their trade on the West Coast main line between London and Glasgow

The two in the foreground are finished in the British Rail 'Intercity' and are just waiting for nameplates. The one behind is in the classic 'railblue' and the one at the rear is in ' Virgin' livery

The Virgin one has had a major makeover and had all the paint stripped off ( Modelstrip, followed by a serious wash in the Ultrasonic cleaning bath) as it was just not good enough.

I'm running thread threads on our 'modelrailforum' here in the U.k where I've split my British Z thread down into three separate threads. Intercity and sube sector (modern image), Railblue (1964 to mid 1980s) and steam era and British rail green (everything before 1967)

Ivan has done a 'sort of' LBSCR E2 0-6-0T to fit the Marklin BR 89 chassis. Available in Acrylic or lost wax brass on Shapeways it looks much more like a Kitson Industrial 0-6-0T with outside cylinders so I've finished mine in NCB (National Coal Board) Apple green. seen here with a rake of Stonysmiths 27T iron ore tipplers

Still work in progress is the classic 3,300HP class 55 Deltic with its two 27 Cylinder Napier Deltic triangular engines, To be finished as 550018 'Ballymoss'
in real life this loco was the last one I got in BR Green and co-incidentally in Railblue back in my teenage trainspotting days

Great job. This is a challange to make non-German models in Z scale here in Europe.

Well the Deltic is sat in front of me on the office desk with the windscreens setting so here is an update

The prototype in 1978 at Doncaster station on the East coast main line on a London Kings Cross to Edinburgh express. These revolutionary locomotives introduced in 1961 were knocking out 3,300 HP from their twin Napier Deltic engines and a tractive effort of 50,000 lb and a maximum speed of 100 mph. 90mph running was the norm on long stretches of the former lNER main line

The photo dates from a time when I was still lugging a Yashica-mat 2 1/4 square twin lens reflex camera around!

55018 Ballymoss in BR Railblue. SD40-2 chassis with added fuel tanks. 3d printed bodyshell by IvanF on shapeways. Painted with Humbrol Railblue acrylic. nameplates from Fox transfers. Decals from an old FMR N scale sheet

Seen on the West Riding Pullman (Atlas coaches from the 'Golden arrow' set fitted with MTL trucks)

Seen on more humble Royal mail parcel train duties. The vans are two BG, Gangwayed brake, vans and two GUV, General Utility, vans. again by IvanF on Shapeways printed in acrylic with 57ft chassis printed in SBF and again running on MTL passenger trucks

Now the Deltics are regarded, like the Alco PAs, as honorary steam locos. They replaced the legendary A3s (Flying Scotsman) and A4s (Mallard) on all the top link duties but were such beasts that they acquired a cult following of their own. I loved them and was bereft when they were replaced by the HSTs. Thankfully no less than six out of the 22 built have survived into preservation although sadly not Ballymoss. However to give you an idea of what they were like this is a link to a video I did of one we had at Barrow Hill 'Alycidon' for an open day heading off to be prepared for the infamous 'Day of the Deltics' when the survivors that were main line registered were let loose on their old stomping ground on a series of high speed charters. The sound of an 18 cylinder triangular Deltic engine being opened up is unforgettable!

And yes, the smoke on the light engine move was arranged!

Strange (and thrilling) sound indeed. In my opinion not very different from EMD engines. Is this weird 27-cylinder triangular prime mover 2-stroke (like EMD) or 4-stroke ?

    Hi,

See another 3d printed 'Darby style' steel gondola. Since Shapeways discontinued their HDA material, I had it printed in 'Smoothest Fine Detail Plastic' (I guess this used to be FXD). The printed car body was again cleaned in an ultra sonic cleaner and just polished with some household cleaning polish and a toothbrush.

I'm rather impressed with this kit. It looks clean and not difficult to construct. Very nice!

    Kev,
Glad to see some someone doing British Z scale. Maybe AZL/SZL can be talked into starting BZL.

With all the good things things going on in Z (Turnouts, SW1200, Cal-Zephyr, etc.) I’ve gotten my Z stuff out of the closet. A new Marklin 2-6-0 drive with working valve gear for my Mogul and a Shorty are on their way.

Ditto on the weathering. How did you get the chipping/flaking to look that good? Excellent work.

First I sprayed a layer of primer. 2nd spayed the body with burned umber. Let all dry very well. Then I applied Vallejo chipping medium where I would like to see chipped off paint eventually. When dry, I spayed the final color. When dry, I chipped off the paint (were the chipping medium was applied). Further more I applied rust color around the chipped paint. When dry, all was covered with dull coat. After that, I have used some Vallejo pigments to add some dust. And again a layer of dull coat.

I made my rust medium by putting a steel cleaning sponge into a jar with cleaning vinegar. Just leave it alone for some time and rust will grow. I am using the same brew already for a couple of years now.

Just apply the rust with an old brush and let it dry well. Afterwards seal it with dull coat.

I have painted and added decals to the SW1500 prototype. The primer coat had a fuzzy finish, not sure what happened there. It was fine after some careful sanding, though. I will have to make many revisions to the etched metal handrail designs so they will easy to install.

Just awesome this sw1500! I think this kind of 3d printing and converting to brass with the lost wax method is the way forward for small production runs. Missed oppertunety for mtl...
