This is for Espeeman, who recently discovered on another thread the magic of water scooping on the Central. This is a shot of a mechanic servicing a tender water scoop on a NYC engine/tender.
This is what it looked like when happening. This is NY Central Niagara 6020 taking water on the fly in Lydic, Indiana, June1950. A Bob Schell photo from the collection of Bob Spaugh. Look at the water everywhere. When they first started doing this at track speed, allegedly windows were broken on trains on adjacent tracks. Throughout New York state, the Central had four tracks, 2 passenger, 2 freight, one each eastbound and westbound. Only two here in Indiana.
Pretty amazing it didn't do more damage to the scoop. Some of the picts from Jerry's link http://www.jimquest.com/writ/trains/pans/scoop.htm showed tenders overflowing. What a mess that must have been! Nice picture, Jim. Thanks for sharing it!
