I am trying to learn more about SP&S signals, and I thought I would do that by checking out what NP and GN used.

After phasing out semaphores or whatever they used before, what type of signals did the NP adopt? If there are differences between territories, I am most interested in whatever was in use in Oregon and Washington.

    Thanks in advance! :tb-biggrin:

(I know this is a cross-post, but there's no SP&S forum so I am posting in both "parent" railroads)

It seems to me that NP remained heavily dependent upon bladed semaphores. MRL was just removing the last of those used along their main line, only last year. I believe that all in Montana are finally out of service or gone.

Ya', except here in the Green River valley where they ran target style signals when other roads used the same tracks, they had semephores way into the BN 80's era, over Stampede, thru eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana, etc.

I remember at least some semaphores along that line.

It's double track territory. I'd bet those signals were at least partially influenced by the GN operations.

From most photos the NP used Semaphors:

For a good selection of photos have a look at the Ron Nixon collection:

You can do a subject search on "Signal"

I think that some of the ealry CTC installations used searchlight signals, but in Washington State most photos show semaphors.
